Homeschooling can be challenging no matter where you reside. However, some cities and states have easier access to resources and are generally more receptive to home schoolers than others. Here we will take a look at some of the important aspects of schooling at home while living in Denver as well as Houston to see which city makes the grade. I am a mother who has had the opportunity to school my children at home in both of these cities. Below are my personal observations and experiences.

Laws

Houston
Since Houston is under the Texas homeschooling laws, home schools in Houston are considered private schools. Therefore, no attendance records or records of any kind need to be turned in to the state. However, there are certain courses that you are required to instruct the children in, which are mainly core subjects. While courses will not be regulated, it's still a good idea to teach the required courses, as they are all vital to a rounded education. However, the way in which they are taught is solely up to the parent/s and/or home school teacher. In Texas, a child can be home schooled by someone other than the legal guardian. Standardized tests can be taken by homeschooled students, however, they are not a requirement. The parent must find out how and where to register for these tests. They are generally available at local schools and institutions or specialized testing centers.

Thanks Rebecca. It's great to hear from someone else who has experienced both states (plus one extra). Here in Houston, we do our studies outside often as well. Thanks Charlotte! :-)

I really enjoyed this. I've homeschooled in three states -- Hawaii, Texas, and Colorado. Thankfully, none of them were super restrictive. I lived in small town in Texas so have a lot more available here in Denver than I did in Texas. However, I do agree that overall, Texas is a better place to homeschool. In many ways, Hawaii was the most fun and we had outdoor school almost all year there, which we loved!

Great topic Momie!!! Since homeschooling seems to be a viable option for many families, it is important for any parent who is considering this to be aware of the laws and how they vary from one state to the next.

Thanks Hannah and Elena. Hannah, on the free curriculum programs, thanks for mentioning that. Perhaps someone who needs to see it will. They don't work for us because the kids are way ahead in reading and a bit ahead in a few other areas as well. I don't use a full curriculum of any kind. I have to custom-design theirs, based on needs in each subject. Some subjects, like science and social studies, I do on the correct grade level. For others who don't have all that bouncing around like we do, I think it's a wonderful resource.

Very informative! Did you know there are places on the internet that send computers, and full curriculums for FREE. My son uses one of them for his son. It's an excellent program. I think Homeschooling is wonderful. Creates a great bond for parent and child. And as a former counselor I say, it's rediculous when people say that homeschooled kids are not properly socialized! I find Homeschooled kids to be among the nicest, brightest, well mannered, and socially mature kids I have ever met!!
