For some individuals who suffer from sleep abnormalities, the complication may be associated with a condition known as Delayed sleep phase syndrome, DSPS. Commonly referred to as a "night owl", if you suffer from DSPS, you may be at risk for insomnia and health complications associated with lack of adequate sleep.
Delayed sleep phase syndrome, DSPS, is a complication in which the person who suffers experiences extreme eveningness. This is to say, DSPS results in the need to stay awake well into the evening, without a need to sleep as the sun sets. Where in adults without DSPS we find melatonin production increases as the sun sets, and evening comes, in individuals with DSPS this same degree of melatonin production may be deficient.
If you suffer from a sleep complication that often results in your need to go to sleep very late into the evening and rise very late in the day, the sleep irregularity may be associated with Delayed sleep phase syndrome. Simply unable to fall asleep until the early morning hours, and then requiring the necessary seven to nine hour of sleep, DSPS can impair your ability to work and even go to school. While your quality of sleep may not be disrupted, the simple ability to fall asleep during regular evening hours can wreak havoc upon your life.
