The best Christmas lights display in the Philadelphia area is at Longwood Gardens. Longwood in known for its fantastic horticultural displays and 1050 acres of gardens, woodlands, and meadows that feature over 11,000 different types of plants. But in the Christmas season, it becomes a winter wonderland full of lights and decorations. Located in Kennett Square, PA, Longwood Gardens is easily accessible from both Philadelphia and Delaware.

In the Christmas season, Longwood Gardens boasts several events that are sure to make you feel the holiday spirit. Between November 22 and January 6, there are ice skating performances by professional figure skaters and local athletes. Skaters perform on an outdoor rink surrounded by Christmas decorations. There are at least three performances each evening (provided the weather is favorable) which are set to the backdrop of trees filled with holiday lights. There are also several daytime performances but they aren't every day, so check before going.

If ice skating isn't your thing, there are organ sing-alongs of Christmas Carols. Each day from November 24 to December 31, the ballroom at Longwood Gardens is filled organ music and happy carolers singing a collection of beloved Christmas songs. You are welcome to just come and enjoy the music or join in and sing about holiday cheer. There are also several concerts including the Drexel University Chorus, Philadelphia Chamber Chorus, the Wilmington Children's Chorus, and several others.

On December 8, there is a special Chanukah celebration and Menorah lighting ceremony.

On December 31, there are New Years activities that are wonderful for families with young children. In addition to the ice skaters and organ sing-alongs, there are also balloon artists, craft stations for kids, face painting, and a barbershop quartet. Then, at 9:15pm, there's a fireworks display above the beautiful lights.

Ever notice how you never really go to places that are famous or well known when you live there? Grew up in Philly and spent a number of years there and in Bucks County as an adult but never found the time to go to Longwood Gardens. Thanks for the glimpse of missed opportunities.
