Recycling has become popular these days, even with holiday gifts. After all how many Santa Claus mugs or bath sets can one person really use? However, a considerable amount of caution and creativity are essential for those who choose to re-gift.

What is re-gifting?

Re-gifting can be anything from re-wrapping a recently received item to passing along a dusty old dud. Unfortunately, the entire range is widely practiced. However, tasteful and thoughtful gifts may be devised from previously gifted items, with a bit of effort and ingenuity.

Be careful!

It's difficult to re-gift without regrets, particularly if your ruse is uncovered.

Pass-along, or even used, gifts are fine for a Yankee Swap or even a White Elephant party. You're supposed to bring odd and unwanted items to these.

However, rewrapping an undesirable gift and passing it along to an unwitting recipient is considered utterly tacky, especially if you get caught! In many social circles, re-gifting ranks on a par with purchasing gifts at the Dollar Store, even if the re-gifted item is a costly one.

Still, nearly everyone does it. We receive a sweet little gift that simply doesn't fit us for some reason, and we re-wrap it and pass it along to someone else. If not, then perhaps we donate it to a holiday charity. Either way, someone else receives our unwanted gifts.

How can you re-gift without being tacky and tasteless?

If you really must re-gift, then you will need to get your act together ahead of time. Be organized!

Designate a storage box, chest, or specific area of your home for new items that you plan to pass along. Keep this merchandise out of site. If family members or other visitors spot these things in your house, then you will be unable to pawn them off as original gifts.

Keep a log of each item and its source. You will need to cross-check this list before deciding to whom you will give it.

Be careful to avoid giving an item to anyone who may know or have contact with the person who gave it to you. What if you give Aunt Edith that batik scarf that you got from Cousin Bertha last year, only to find out that Bertha gave it to Edith in the first place?

You just have to make sure you remember who gave you what, so you don't get busted!

I actually do a version of regifting, but I only give away things that I really want to keep. Sometimes I know that someone would really love something that is precious to me, and I'll give it to them. Most of the time, they are not aware that the item was mine first. But again, I only give things that I really want to keep, not the other way around. Have you seen that Christmas commercial where the fruit cake keeps turning up with different people, because everyone can't stand it? They keep regifting it until the mailman gets it. Then he gives it back to the original people. Cute!

Fun article-I love the idea of the hot potato regifting-I think it would be fun to make a game out of it.

Nothing wrong with re-gifting. I think it would be better for someone to get use out of an item rather than it sitting in your closet :)

If I get gifts that I can't use, I'll save it for next year, and give it to someone who can. Great article.

I live in Thailand and used to be a teacher here. At Christmas tons of my kids would bring me gifts that were obviously re-gifted. Didn't matter to me though as Thais make amazing crafts, so they were still beautiful in my house whether regifted or not :)

Spider Lady a love the re-gifting. My family now has a traditon of adding books we have read to other gifts and passing them one. Soem gifts would be tacky to re-gift and others are just re-cycled...LOL

I wanted to tell you my mother did this one year and gave me back what I gave her the year before. We laughed about it until she died. However I do have friends that regift books and things and we all know we are doing it. That is fine, but you sure ought to know who your doing this too or it could cause a lot of problems.

GREAT ARTICLE LINDA, SORRY I AM BACK TO ALL CAPS. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE DO THIS, IT IS TACKY. BUT, THERE ARE TIMES WHEN PEOPLE JUST CAN'T AFFORD A GIFT. SO I SUPPOSE THEY DO THE NEXT BEST THING TO THEM BY GIVING SOMETHING THEY HAVE GOTTEN. THANK YOU FOR SHARING. HUGS MARY
