First, let me offer a disclaimer. I'm a Barry Manilow fan. Having said that, I offer the following review in as objective a manner as possible.

You gotta see this show!

My husband and I went to see the show on Dec. 1, which is the last regular show of the year. (During December, "Music and Passion" puts on a special Christmas show.) The theater is located inside the Hilton and seats about 1,500. I took a look at all views of the show, including walking up to the balcony, and I can honestly say that there's not a bad seat in the house. This advice may seem strange, but if you're going for the music, you might consider a balcony seats. You've still got an excellent view of the stage and your concert experience won't be interrupted by all of the crowd noise from the main floor.

Our seats were excellent for Manilow fans. We were in the center of the fifth row. There is no opening act, no one to warm-up the crowd. The theater opens at 7 p.m. You're ushered to your seat and given a "Music and Passion" glowstick to use in lieu of a Bic. Inside the theater, make a point to visit the Copacabana bar. (The prices are a little high, especially considering you could get drinks for free just outside the door in the slot machine area.) Inside, gold and platinum records and various awards line the walls. You can even buy a feather boa for $5 so you, too, can have yellow feathers in your hair.

Takeaways
  • Barry Manilow's "Music and Passion" is one of the hottest shows in Vegas.
  • The singer mixes his big hits with songs from his recent "decade" albums.
  • The show has no opening act and no intermission.
Did You Know?
Sales of Barry Manilow music is on track this decade to exceed what was previously his biggest decade, the 70s.

One of my friends mentioned Manilow a few days ago so I decided to stop by and read this again. A great piece Amanda!

Amanda - I wanted to let you know I replied to your comment on the figure skating. I agree with you about the age issue. Watching Kimmie Meissner, at 18, being so spooked by younger skaters, was something else. Also, how odd that the top skaters can't even compete in the World championshiops, as you noted!

No, the Manhatton Transfer is not his back-up group. The group is great! The singers are young and energetic.

I'm a Manilow fan, too, and I get razzed about it. I can't help it. Ever since he revamped the American Bandstand theme song, I was hooked. Oh, great, now I've got that song in my head. Very catchy tune. Super article you wrote here.
