Before I announce my Top Ten Movies for 2007, let me clarify something. I go to the movies for entertainment. I don't generally go to see a film for its social redeeming value or because it is newsworthy. I get enough of that through television talk shows, magazines, newspapers and the like.

If I want to get depressed, I just turn on the news. I don't need to pay $8 a ticket for that pleasure. I go to the movies when I want to laugh, cry (happily), or just have fun. Therefore, the films you find on my top ten list are certainly not going to be the same as those you might find on a typical movie critic's list.

Having said that, here are my Top Ten Movies for 2007 in reverse order:

At the number ten spot is Waitress, starring Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion. The film was nominated for three awards and took home two. It was nominated for a Humanitas Prize, a Newport Beach Film Festival Audience Award, which it won, and a Sarasota Film Festival Award, which it also won. Nathan Fillion also took home a Newport Beach Film Festival Award for acting.

This film seemed like an unlikely winner, which just goes to show you that sometimes things can surprise you. Russell plays a young waitress who is trying to find a way out of her unhappy marriage when she finds herself pregnant. With her world closing in on her, she channels her pain into something positive and discovers that she can bake the most amazing pies, which she sells and serves at her boss's diner.

Then something magical happens. She meets the man of her dreams, who just happens to be her obstetrician. And, of course, as fate would have it, he's already married.

While all of this sounds like it could be a real "downer," oddly enough it is anything but. Russell, from television's Felicity fame, is her usual charming self. But the real revelation here is Fillion, who proves to be charming, funny, and romantic all at the same time. Paging a new Dr. McDreamy!

Takeaways
  • I go to the movies for entertainment, not for the film's social deeming value.
  • Films should have a good story, great actors, and competent direction.
  • The fantasy world took front and center in the films of 2007.

I loved Ratatouille just as much as my kids. The only other movie I've seen on this list is Waitress which I thought was an alright movie. My husband would probably pick Harry Potter or Transformers as his favorites. Thanks for sharing this list of movies from 2007.

I haven't seen many movies this year, so I'm taking your word for it - I'm printing this out so I can check them out as DVD rentals! Great list!

Great list! I had a similar article in my to-do list, but I see you beat me to it - though mine would be a lot different. Hm, maybe I'll go with it. Most of these movies were really good though!

the Rat movie got on my nerves because they kept enforcing the no stealing moral crap...don't steal...and then it seemed like the message was that rats an humans may one day co-exist together in harmony...which one could say was an underlying accept people for their differences thing, but no..rats aren't people.
