Wreaths make beautiful Christmas decorations for the front entry, back door, above the fireplace, or just about anywhere. The great thing about Christmas wreaths is that they come in so many varieties. Homemade Christmas wreaths are even more personal. Wreaths are also excellent Christmas crafts for kids.

There are enough ways to make homemade Christmas wreaths to fill an entire bookcase. Here is an easy, inexpensive Christmas wreath craft project. These homemade Christmas wreaths are easy and safe enough even for little kids to make.

Plastic Bag Christmas Wreath
This homemade Christmas wreath is a craft project that recycles. It's made from plastic shopping bags. New trash bags may also be used. Since it's made from plastic, this Christmas wreath is weatherproof.

Collect plastic bags, like those now used at grocery stores and most retail stores. Or, if you like, use new trash bags. If you decide to use trash bags, you can choose either white or dark green for a more traditional homemade Christmas wreath. Since trash bags now come in many different colors, you could have a wreath that is lilac if you want. I used scented trash bags and had a homemade Christmas wreath that also smelled like vanilla.

It takes about three 13-gallon sized trash bags to make a Christmas wreath. I've never used the plastic shopping bags for this project. I would make a guess of at least 10-12 plastic shopping bags would probably be needed to make one Christmas wreath.

Other than plastic bags, the only other item needed for this homemade Christmas wreath is a wire clothes hanger. Try to match the wire hanger closely to the color of your plastic bags. You can also use a wire cutter, but it isn't necessary for this Christmas wreath project.

First, cut the plastic bags into strips. It's quicker and faster if you fold the plastic bags as you cut them so that you cut more than one strip at a time.

Cut the strips about 1 1/2 inches wide. The length of your plastic strips determines the fullness of your homemade wreath. I cut mine about seven inches long for a very full wreath.

Next shape the wire clothes hanger into a circle.

Takeaways
  • Christmas wreaths made with plastic bags teach about recycling.
  • Plastic bag Christmas wreaths are technically free to make.
  • New trash bags may also be used to make these homemade Christmas wreaths.
Did You Know?
Ancient Romans used wreaths as a symbol of victory.
