Winter Trail Hiking Etiquette

Consideration of others is very important when you are outside on different trails in the winter. Here are somethings to consider that will make the enjoyment of the outdoors better for everyone.

Cross-country skiing, hiking, snowmobiling and extreme sport skiing shouldn't involve an attitude. Winter sports outside are basically called the "silent sport." The outdoors, which in many places has pretty scenery, is to be enjoyed by all.

Here are some rule for single and double track trails.

Single Track Trails; The skier going uphill, should always yield the right of way to the downhill skier. When two skiers meet on level ground, the slower skier should yield the right of way. When a faster skier comes on a slower skier going in the same direction, the slower skier should step aside and let the faster skier go through. If a skier yells "track", you should step aside and let them pass by. Once the word "track" is yelled, the skier should follow with the word "please." This is the universal way to be polite and acknowledge the yielding skier.

Double Track Trails; When using the left track to pass, if you are skiing with a friend or you think it is a better track, step to the right for oncoming skiers. When two skiers meet on a hill, make sure the tracks are far enough apart so that each can safely pass. If there isn't enough room, the uphill skier should wait to go. If there is oncoming traffic, and a slow skier is notices a faster skier approaching going in the same direction, the slower skier should step aside.

For All Tracks; If you feel the call of nature, step far off the track and go. Nobody wants to ski in yellow snow. Always carry out what you carry in. Don't leave trash, bottles, or cans along the tracks. If your skiing causes a mark or blemish in the trail, repair it. It is too easy for others to have an accident over your left mark. Feed the donation pipe. The money donated goes for keeping the trails and tracks in shape for the enjoyment of everyone. People that use snowshoes are always encouraged to stay off the tracks. The side of the tracks are usually posted only for their use.
