If anything, the Top Ten U. S. News Stories in 2007 are evidence of times that are fraught with peril for large nations and small. The U. S. news media stationed at home and around the globe often found their collective in baskets filled to the brim with stories that reflected either the dangers of a world awaiting the side effects of global warming or the dangers implicit in ongoing international conflicts. 2007 had its bright moments but you may not find too many of them listed among the top ten U. S. news stories of 2007.

1. The Surge. Because U. S. troops remain in combat in Iraq it is likely that for many people one of the top ten U. S. news stories in 2007 was connected with that seemingly endless saga. On January 21, 2007 the first troops to arrive in Baghdad as part of a troop build up, or surge, were on the ground. The nation and the nation's lawmakers were still debating the merits of the plan to reinforce troops on the ground with additional American forces to form a surge to help bring an end civil war in Iraq. After almost a full year of " the surge" some progress is said to have been made in some sectors of the nation. Still many assume that whenever U.S troops withdraw a new round of civil unrest will commence.

2. Osama Bin Laden, Missing Still. There are just enough press stores and enough Bin Laden taped releases to continually remind Americans that Osama Bin Laden, allegedly the architect of 9/11 and the inspiration for the Islamist Jihad of terror against the U.S. is still very much alive and well and living...well nobody exactly knows. The fact that with all its state of the art intelligence, the assistance of foreign governments and our own troops on the ground there still has been no luck in finding this saboteur of American domestic peace. Another full year has come and gone and just like Whitey Bulger, Osama Bin Laden has evaded capture.
