I am afraid to vomit. I have emetophobia, which is the fear of vomit and vomiting.

Emetophobia is hard enough to deal with on a daily basis, but when you are smack dab in the middle of stomach flu season and everyone you run into tells you about how they are getting over the norovirus, it's a nightmare.

Norovirus according to wikipedia is, "is a genus of viruses of the family Caliciviridae. Recent scientific findings reveal that the genus causes around 50% of all gastroenteritis (stomach pain, diarrhea, and vomiting) around the world." It is the end of the world for an emetophobe.

Norovirus is highly contagious and can be spread in one of three ways. First it can be spread by eating or drinking food contaminated with norovirus. Secondly it can be spread by touching a hard surface contaminated with norovirus and then putting your hand into your mouth. Thirdly norovirus is spread through having direct contact with someone who has the illness.

The tricky part of norovirus is twofold. First, you can are contagious and can transmit norovirus prior to even showing symptoms. Secondly, even after you begin to feel better from the illness your body is still shedding the disease and you are still contagious for anywhere from three days to two weeks. People often think, well I am feeling better and no longer throwing up, I will go back to work. This is the kiss of death if someone with norovirus works in the food industry and goes back to food prep while still contagious.

Norovirus can happen at any time of the year, but is most active during the Winter months when people tend to spend more time inside. As an emetophobe I am on pins and needles from November through April of most years. I live in fear of getting norovirus.

One of the worst parts of Emetophobia is that the thought of vomit or vomiting can trigger a panic attack and severe anxiety. I go into high anxiety mode when I find out someone who I came in contact with that day came down with norovirus. I combat this as much as I can by taking SSRI's and by frequent hand washing, but the panic and anxiety is still there.

Takeaways
  • Norovirus begins 24 to 48 hours after ingestion of the virus
  • Noroviruses are a group of viruses that cause the "stomach flu," or gastroenteritis
  • Symptoms of norovirus illness usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and some stomach cramping
Did You Know?
Illness caused by norovirus infection has several names: Stomach flu. Viral gastroenteritis. Gastroenteritis. Acute gastroenteritis. Non-bacterial gastroenteritis. Food poisoning. Calicivirus infection

I have had a phobia of vomiting as long as I can remember. To make it worse, after a sever bout of the stomach flu when I was 16, I had rare nerve damage due to the flu and now have had several stomach disorders for 12 years now. Thankfully Mayo Clinic, a wonderful family and my strong faith in God had helped me endure. I still have severe stomach problems every day that do not mix well with a vomiting phobia (I am sure you all can imagine), but have succeeded very well. I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful children and a successfull career. Some days are harder than others and I do not know how I can endure 50 plus more years of this, but I can only take it 1 day at a time.

Thanks to everyone for sharing. it's nice to know we're not alone. This week, my nephew got sick during breakfast. He didn't understand... but remained calm nonetheless. My sister started to panic... thus.. he started crying. Normally, i would run the other way. I decided to pick him up for hugs. He calmed down and started smiling. Looking through a child's eyes, these situations are helping to overcome my fears of embarrasment. Sure.... i still eat lemon, drink tea, or down a cap full of vinegar to curb nausea. each day brings new progress. i hope this helps someone out there. cheers!

I have the same intense fear of throwing up. Especially if it involves long periods on major nausea. I'd rather have diarrhea any day over throwing up! One thing that has helped my fear a little bit is to always have Phenergan suppositories (ewww I know) in the fridge. Every year when I go to the doctor for a check up or whatever I ask him for an Rx of this med to keep just in case I get the stomach flu during the next year. I tell him how much I worry about throwing up, and he acts like he has other patients that have similar phobias. That medication almost always relieves nausea pretty quickly and makes you sleep until the symptoms are gone. You should ask your doctor next time you have a check up. It helps you sleep better at night I promise!

The virus has just been reported here in my very own town!!!! I was so hoping that we avoided it. I start a new job on Monday at the local high school and I couldn't be more terrified. It's so nice to see that I'm not alone in my fear. Fingers crossed for all emets!

I too am a vomit phobe. I'm 42 now, but have had the phobia since I was a kid. I have small kids now, and spend an extraordinary amount of energy wondering when my kids wil get it again. The thing I think is fascinating is the link between this and panic attacks. I started getting panic attacks in high school ( I was in a boarding school where stomach flu broke out at least once a year). I always knew these panic attacks were related to vomiting, but couldn't quite make the connection. It turns out, I'd get panic attacks everywhere I had been when someone threw up. Flying, riding in a car, classrooms, etc. Over the years, I've learned to deal with the panic attacks, but they had such a large impact on my life. My phobia does have a negative impact on my kids, because it is hard to ever completely relax without worrying that one of them may be coming down with something. I'm glad to know I'm not alone in this fear, but I'd like it better if there was a way to overcome it.

I am also afraid of vomiting, although I don't have a severe case as to avoiding public places, My brother just came home for spring break with the virus, and I was freaking out. I thought surely we would all come down with it, because even though he was sick at school he was still shedding the virus and hadn't been ill the full 24 hours. He was still contageous. That was over a week ago and so far none of us have gotten it. It really is a common phoebia and people should not be embarrased. It's not something we can help and nobody understands it because they say "it's not that bad" or "I don't understand why you are so scared." I will tell you that I vomited for about an hour, probably 10 times on my birthday last year (I was wasted). I puked forever but in that instance I wanted to throw up. I wanted to get it out. Every time I puked I felt better and better. There is some hope! The worst part is nausea. I felt that if I just let my body do it's own thing I would feel better, so I

I am also a vomit phob, and a mother of 4 small children, and let me tell ya, thats scary when you're afraid of barfing. Kids will catch a stomach virus on average, twice a year, and adults acquire immunity to most stomach viruses as they get older. I finally accepted the fact that these ailmentw are going to occur no matter what you do, and fortunately they dont last long. Noroviruses are brutal and can hit fast and furiously, but only last 6-12 hours. The sooner you vomit and get it out of your system, the faster you will feel better. Hopefully you will get a nice long break before another hits. I decided to stop fearing the stomach viruses because, if you think about it, the fear consumes you everyday, and the actual bug only lasts a few hours. Immunity and exposure to lots of people is the best prevention. My brother is a pediatrician and has only had the norovirus once in twenty years! So instead of living in a bubble, get out and expose yourself and your kids to a wide va

I was hyper dosing on ginger and regular dosing on Dimenhydrinate (Gravol), so I think that helped. It started Monday night and I had my appetite back by Wednesday afternoon. But, being an emetophobe/germophobe, I continued in fear until the weekend and have now doubled my OCD rituals. I try to be rational in my phobia by being well informed and hiding away. Plus, I don't eat much unless I've prepared it, or I've heated it up to what's hopefully a hot enough temperature to kill any bugs. I hate being this way, but it's nice to see that I'm not alone. My recommendation is to keep a lot of ginger on hand as it's as useful as motion sickness drugs while being all natural. It's really good for you too and I've found that it can even ward off cold and flus if you catch it in time. You gotta down a lot of it (I'm up to a good 2000 mgs a day) and it may burn like indigestion, but it calms the belly.

All the care I had been taking was down the drain. Needless to say, I was totally freaked out and spent my Sunday getting as much sleep as I could, drinking nothing but fruit and vegetable juices and taking plenty of ginger and echinacea. I didn't speak to him until the Monday, which, I figured, would be my guiding factor; if he was still well, odds were I would be too. I got through Sunday and Monday wasn't too bad as I still felt well. But, alas, when I called him around 5pm, the first thing he says is, "Ugh... I'm sick." My heart dropped, but I hoped that my Sunday's medicating would help me through. My big mistake may have been ice cream. After having some, my stomach started rumbling, but I hoped it might have just been settling after dessert. But, a few hours later, I felt it "flip" and that was that. The good thing is that it wasn't as bad as it could have been considering some of the stories you hear. I had mild diarrhea and nausea for about a day and a half. I was

We had a serious outbreak here in Quebec last year, so it looks like it has crossed the Atlantic. KG is right in trying to use common sense. The bug must be ingested, so be very careful. As we are all emetophobes here, I'm sure you guys can appreciate this story of how I caught it last year. January '07 and we're deep into an epidemic and I'm terrified every day. Nevertheless, it's a friend's birthday so I decide I'll go to the 'afterhours' club where the celebration is being held. Would you believe that about 5 minutes after arriving, my friend (who has been there for a few hours already and has been in the bathroom) accidentally sticks his dirty, grimy index finger in my mouth when pointing something out to another friend?!? You couldn't ask for anything worse; an unwashed finger that has been around more than a hundred people in close quarters AND has been on bathroom faucets, money, and handshakes, full into my mouth! All the care I had been taking was down the drain. Ne

OMG...reading this was like reading something I would write!! I've been dealing with emotophobia for almost ten years now (I think it started when I was 7 and I'm 16 now) and my mom had a stomach virus on Monday. All I can think about is how I keep touching so much things that could have the virus on them...like the keyboard...it took me until yesterday before I felt it was safe to go on the computer again...and I always wash my hands for about 10-20 minutes whenver I come home from school or a public place...I go out of my way to not touch the desks at school...I'm always so afraid I'll catch the virus and then I get a panic attack, which makes me feel sick to my stomach, which makes me even more nervous, so then my stomach feels worse...well in any case I wish you luck in dealing with this and I hope you don't catch the virus!! I hope I don't catch it either!! The fear has even made me go so far as deciding I don't want kids because I don't want to deal with morning sickness or st

My god, I thought it was just me. Reading all of your comments was like listening to myself talk. I found this site looking up stomach flu to try and convince myself Im not going to catch it. My brother-in-law, whom my husband works with, thinks he might have it. Our sons go to school together, so daily contact with their family is unavoidable. So now, here come th panic attacks and the desire to retreat into a bubble. Has anyone found any relief from this, does anything help get rid of this all consumming fear

norovirus effects different blood groups in different ways. blood group 0 usually has the worst symptoms when infected, unfortunately most people in the UK are type 0 but not all, which is generally why not everyone gets it. blood groups B and AB generally dont show any symptoms or have less severe symptoms. i am a teacher in spain here kids get it all year round, but as long as you wash your hands and dont kiss people on the lips you are pretty unlikely too get it. i find also that to drink a few beers and a few large whiskeys is the best medicine for any stomach complaint .
