I moved here to Topeka, Kansas, from Modesto, California, almost a year after 9-11. I thought I had pretty much seen everything, and heard of more. Wrong! Moving to the Midwest from California was different, that's for sure. That's because back in sunny California, we didn't have Fred Phelps!

Never had I even heard of the guy, let alone his family. As chance would have it, we had only been in Topeka for a week, if that, when myself, and my son, his wife and their two small children were out driving about, getting ourselves familiar with Topeka. I'll never forget this, either. We were all safely buckled in my mini van, my son was the driver that day. I, being Grandma, sat in the middle of the back seat, in between the two children aged 6 and 2 years at that time.

We were driving along Topeka boulevard and I could see ahead of us, on the left, a large neon sign was flashing ExpoCentre, along with whatever the event was at the time. I was reading out loud all the coming attractions, as my son was groaning something about"Topeka being the most boring place to move to." I I think that's when I realized that there seemed to be a bunch of people in some sort of on the sidewalk up ahead us. Of course, I was wondering what they could be waiting in line for and suddenly my son had to hit the brakes, as the car ahead was. But the vehicle ahead of that car had decided to either to turn or pick someone up, we thought and had not given any signal. Other cars were honking, angry voices were yelling. I looked out my grandsons window as some cars began to go cars around us. My first thought thought was that they were yelling at us.

Takeaways
  • We should have the right to not have to allow our children to see these signs on their way to school
  • How does a dead soldier speak up and defend his or her name from such disgraceful words?
  • Why are these people allowed to go on?
Did You Know?
Please, let everyone demand a stop to the Phelps!

They should move to Iran, and stay there. Their views are remarkably similary to those of Ahmedinejad et al in many ways.

These folks are definitely way off base. As pastors, my husband and I have watched several people who were strong Christians gradually fall into strange doctrine. It is not a good thing as far as God is concerned!

Fred Phelps sucks, and so does his family/cult. There's a reason he was disbarred - too bad his kids haven't been. :-(
