After Christmas and New Years are over, all the gifts have been unwrapped, and returned, and the new calendar hangs on the wall many people will fall into something of a depression. The Christmas season is an exciting time with all its decorations, the music, the songs, the gathering of family and friends, and the food. Once all of the excitement has died down, many people look for something just as exciting to fill the empty space in their lives during the first few weeks of the New Year. Here are some suggestions of things that I have done over the years to help beat the post holiday blues. Some of these projects are short term projects, while some of them can set you down a road that will have a long term positive effect on the rest of your life.

One of the greatest things that people can do to beat the post holiday blues is to take interest in a new hobby. Every year after Christmas, I try to have at least one new project to occupy my time for the first week or so after Christmas. For Children, this often means playing with a new toy or video game they got for Christmas, and figuring out how to beat the game or trying to soup up their new toy. I remember one Christmas, I got a camera. After Christmas I became all involved in getting the best shots with that camera, getting the best lighting for the pictures, and everything that comes along with being a novice photographer.

After Christmas is the perfect time to redecorate, possibly even so some small renovations, around your house. Get creative and totally change the colors of the rooms in your house, or even the layout of certain rooms of your house. A new appearance with new surroundings including furniture, even something small such as a new set of bed linens, can help you to beat the post holiday blues.

Setting reasonable new years resolutions can also help you to beat the post holiday blues. If you have set a goal such s going back to school, winter term is the perfect time to go back to school. The new challenges of college will challenge your mind as you work towards completing a certificate, degree, or diploma in hopes of getting that better job you set for yourself as a new year's resolution.

Very good advice. I actually look forward to the period after the holidays, but mostly it's because I have a ton of hobbies and it's when I finally get time to get back to them.
