No one wants to consider the possibility that their car will break down. But what happens if you breakdown in the middle of nowhere with your pets? Here's how to prepare for that possibility.

Charge Your Phone

It is easy to forget to charge your phone and then run out of battery as you travel, especially if you are in a hurry and you have not taken the time to put the phone on the charger. This can be a nuisance when you are near to home. But when you are hours from home in the middle of nowhere with your pets, the situation will be completely different. A normally bothersome episode will now be a situation fraught with dangers.

Pack Extra Pet Food

In the event of a breakdown, you might be able to call for aid quickly if your mobile phone is charged and in good working order. But if aid will take quite some time to reach you, you must be prepared for this eventuality. Just as responsible drivers will have extra supplies of food and water for themselves in the case of a breakdown or emergency situation, there should also be enough food and water to feed your cat, dog or any other animals that are with you.

Pets can become very distressed in the event of a car breakdown. If they sense that you are under a lot of stress and they find out that there is no food for them, this will only increase their anxiety levels. Before long, you will have more than a broken down car to worry about. You will also have a howling dog or a whining cat to deal with as well.

Pet Bedding

Pets who travel with you will usually sit comfortably in their dog kennel or cat kennel for the duration of the journey. However, if the car breaks down, it is also a good idea to take along their bedding and to place it inside their kennel to provide them with a familiar sight and smell from home. Just as a security blanket can help soothe a child who is undergoing problems, so too can a cat or dog's bedding help them feel safe and calmer.

Never Leave Your Pet alone in the Car!

Takeaways
  • Make sure your phone is charged in case you need to use it to call for aid
  • Pack extra pet food in case it takes a while for roadside assistance to arrive
  • Take along extra pet bedding

Do not leave your pets alone in the car!

AC changed my article, so that's why it sounds like travelling with pets could cause a nervous breakdown! Sophie

I have to say my first thought upon reading the title was that traveling with pets would cause you to have a breakdown. LOL This is excellent advice though and important to keep in mind. We take long trips with our pets often and try to be as prepared as possible, because you just never know what will happen.

Smart thinking to prepare rather than panic or try to cope without adequate supplies when it happens.

I just bought rabbits and will probably have to travel with them at some point - I'm dreading it :-) Good article.

This is really good advice! My pets hate the shortest of car rides, I can't imagine breaking down with them.

Hi Sophie, Lenora just made me laugh with her comment. This is an excellent article; I see you've been very busy lately. Good. This article will help me someday when I go to drive to pick up a new kitty. I would NEVER have thought of these things.
