The first time I saw the ocean was on a quiet, cool beach on Tybee Island in Georgia. I was so overwhelmed with a feeling of vastness and omnipotence that I was afraid to look out to the ocean when I first arrived on the island. Then, I opened my eyes to take it all in. Since that moment, I've been a sea-lover, and I owe it all to this secret, beach getaway.

Tybee Island is a small island right outside Savannah and is considered to be "Savannah, Georgia's beach". So small in fact, you can drive from one end of the island to the other in about 10 minutes with no traffic to slow you down. There's a little of something for everyone looking for that small, beach town feeling. The island itself is only 5 miles long but holds a boat full of activities for relaxation or adventure. Boating, fishing, and even some surfing will hold the attention of any nature lover looking for some recreation.

The island is home to many fine restaurants and hotels as well as luxurious condominiums. The Crab Shack is a well-known seafood restaurant located right on Chimney Creek. The view and atmosphere can't be beat as the dining area is a deck that overlooks the creek. Tasty treats include the shrimp and crab au-gratin and homemade deviled crabs that are out of this world. Keep an eye on the kids. Right before you walk in to the restaurant you can view alligators in the "gator lagoon". The kids are allowed to feed the animals and they even have the occasional show with Magic Marc, a local entertainer. In addition, the Crab Shack is home to many rescued, seafood-fed, fat cats who will become your best friend if you break the rules by feeding them.

Along with fine food, there is a healthy artisan community. Many fine sculptures, paintings, and other fine art and beach art can be found right on the main road soon after you cross the bridge. The island even has a custom surfboard designer to create your perfect longboard. At the other end of the island, resides a tattoo parlor called The Brass Anchor, for when you're looking to get some ink. If you're looking for some souvenirs to take home, visit Chu's department store for a variety of beach themed items.
