With the first snow of the year today in Kansas City, netizens are scampering for weather reports. Are the roads slick, which roads are closed, and the big question, is school out?

Though Kansas City is no stranger to snow, averaging 11 inches annually, KC sees far less white stuff than the national average. Consequently, it takes very little Kansas City snow to raise our hopes for school closings or cause us distress concerning road closings.

Following are some of the best resources for Kansas City weather, road conditions and school closings to get you up to speed. Many of these weather sources are as valuable for any city in Jackson County, Platte County, Clay County and beyond.

National Weather Service - Kansas City
One of the best sources for Kansas City weather conditions, this government sponsored site lacks advertisements and is easy to use. Some features include a 7-day forecast, radar and satellite images and en español translation. (Web site link)

KMBC - Greater Kansas City School Closings
A favorite news source, KMBC maintains regular updates on Kansas City school closings as well as Jackson County, Clay County and Platte County schools. E-mail updates on Kansas City school closings are also available. (Web site link)

Missouri Department of Transportation - Kansas City Road Conditions
MDOT provides image maps of weather related road closings, plowing priorities and winter driving tips. Kansas City road construction areas may also be located here. (Web site link)

Kansas City Flight Conditions at MCI Airport
For air bound travelers, check out this site for the flight status on a number of carriers, including delayed and canceled flights due to inclement weather. (Web site link)

AccuWeather - Kansas City Weather Conditions and Beyond
For Kansas City weather junkies and individuals who need to be in the know, AccuWeather will meet most any Kansas City weather need including radar, maps, weather news, weather video, forecasts, extreme weather, world weather and more. (Web site link)

I took a few shots and they're urban so not your usual ice storm fare, less snow etc. The day ones are pretty good but I need to learn city life/night photography. That and getting ice water on the lens doesn't help LOL

Donna I hope you share your photos or videos of the ice storm!

I agree with Candles...The Weather Channel is great for the "larger picture" and live reports, but our local channels' weather reports are usually much more accurate. Netizen and weather junkie here;)

I don't like The Weather Channel, see it's not listed, I think the locals know more about Kansas City weather. Thanks!

I like KMBC too and checking out these other KC weather sites. Kansas city weather is crazy sometimes, especially the March ice storms.

"netizens"...nice. I tell you, if you look up the word Creative Writer in the dictionary, there's a picture of Donna Porter right beside it! If I ever visit Kansas, I'll bring this article with me. Five stars!!!

LOL Kay - normally I would approximate but when it comes to weather people like numbers. I'll probably learn from someone that it is 11.32 inches :-P I know some avid weather junkies. :-)

I'm shocked that KC only gets 11 inches of snow a year.
