A religious huckster?

Mike Huckabee seems like a nice guy. He's friendly and articulate, and he has carried himself fairly well during the Republican primary debates. There's only one foreseeable problem with his candidacy. Mike Huckabee is clearly batshit crazy.
In fact, Mike Huckabee thinks God is swaying voters, and attributes his own surge in recent polls to prayer.
Now, we've all seen what results when God selects our president. Our current commander-in-chief George W. Bush has stated time and again that God delivered him directly to the White House. (Yes, dear readers, it was God, not Governor Jeb Bush who fixed it so that George W. Bush would "win" the state of Florida in the 2000 election.)
Can this nation really endure another of God's sub-par picks?
Well, perhaps Mike Huckabee is wrong, and God is not persuading voters after all. But Mike Huckabee would certainly take issue with that assessment. When asked by a young man what Huckabee attributes his recent surge in polls to, Huckabee responded:
"There's only one explanation for it, and it's not a human one. It's the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of five thousand people. And that's the only way that our campaign could be doing what it's doing. And I'm not being facetious, nor am I trying to be trite. There literally are thousands of people across this country who are praying that a little will become much. And it defies all explanation. It has confounded the pundits, and I'm enjoying every minute of their trying to figure it out. And until they look at it from an experience just beyond human, they'll never figure it out. And that's probably just as well. That's honestly why it's happening."
All right. Huckabee didn't identify God by name, so he could have been referring to any supernatural power when he said "beyond human." Perhaps he meant that aliens were using mind control to sway Iowa voters. Or maybe there are vampires working over the undecided in New Hampshire. But frankly, I don't think that was what Mike Huckabee was referring to. I think he was referring to God.

In hindsight: Not only is this a well-written and clearly communicated message...that turned out to be correct...so are the comments.
I would think a fundamentalist many, and certainly a fundamentalist majority, would be able to handily accomplish the above mentioned missions upon which they are so analy focused, and then some. At best they are weak; at worst, a free America's collective embarrassment.You are free, of course, to perceive fundamentalists as anything but the few if you wish.
I base my "fundamentalist few" *opinion* upon several observations, among them the following. Fundamentalists have been unable to: overturn Roe v. Wade; pass a constituional amendment which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman; stop the growing number of states and corporations which legally recognize civil unions/domestic partnerships between homosexual and heterosexual couples; replace the teaching of evolution (accepted by the mainstream scientific community) in our schools and universities with the pseudoscience of creationism and intelligent design. And when they attack various movies, music, and books, the popularity and profitability of these artistic endeavors usually skyrockets. Although marginally gifted at resurrecting the emotional witch hunt atmosphere of the McCarthyism era which only obscures the critical issues of health care, national security, and education, they have failed to halt the tide of progressive social change. A very interesting piece. There is something terribly wrong in America when we get so Vain as to think God Himself (for those who believe in God) deigns to answer the prayers of people seeking political power on earth. It's not a sincere reflection of Christian belief to tell people you prayed for political power and God is answering your prayer. It is counter to everything the New Testament and the New Covenant espouses about separating Cesar (political power) from God - it is a calculated manipulation of a presumed gullible electorate. To quote Max Von Sydow from "Hannah and her Sisters" - "If Jesus ever comes back, He will never stop throwing up."
He sounds like nothing more than a Bush clone who represents more of the same; just another regressive presidential wannabe who would continue to ignore the more immediate concerns of the majority of Americans by embracing and spouting the same polarizing fluff to the fundamentalist few. And the fundamentalist mentality is flocking to Huckabee like sheep on a stick. I would imagine that liberals, Democrats, and even that dingbat cultural phenom Oprah are all beginning to smile. I know I am. So I'm giving Mike Huckabee a pat on his philosophically challenged rump...run, Mike, run. Although the Dems are divided going into Iowa, I believe they, and many other voters, will unit behind whichever candidate becomes their nominee when faced with the spector of a Huckabee presidency.

You're absolutely right, Jeff. And when politicians truly believe that the righteous "go to a better place," it makes it much easier to send our soldiers to their deaths.
And Jack, it's important to note...when the feel we, or Muslims, or anyone else...is going "straight to hell" it makes it easier to drop the bombs on the damn infidels, or jail the blasphemers..
Given Huckabee's disparaging remarks about Romney's Mormon faith, I wouldn't put it past him to call me plenty of names. In fact, the batshit former governor of Arkansas has already made it clear on national television that he believes "the only way to Heaven is through Jesus Christ." According to him, anyone not born again is going straight to hell.
