Krusteaz has been a favorite brand of ours for years. We were introduced to the Krusteaz brand with their pancake mix, but now we also purchase other products, such as their muffin mixes.

My family, as well as my daycare children, love muffins! Since my husband has high cholesterol, and I am on a diet, the fat free cranberry orange flavor really appealed to me. I have been burned on fat free products in the past, since they are often tasteless with an odd texture, but I felt positive enough about the Krusteaz brand that I took a chance.

Description

This muffin mix comes in a 17.5 ounce box, and it makes 11 muffins. The outside of the box refers to these as a supreme muffin mix. To make the muffins, you simply dump the dry mix into a bowl and stir until all the dry ingredients are moistened. Then you drain the cranberries, which come in a tuna-fish sized can, and gently fold them into the batter.

Once mixed, you fill prepared muffin tins 2/3 full, pop them in an oven that has been preheated to 400 degrees, and bake them for about 15 minutes.

The Verdict

Wow. These are incredibly tasty, and you would never know that they are fat free! My husband really likes these muffins, and I feel they are a good choice for his high cholesterol, since they contain ZERO cholesterol and are fat free.

There are plenty of cranberries, even though they are sliced and not whole, to give each muffin plenty of cranberry flavor. The can of cranberries also contains orange peel. If you have ever done any cooking with orange zest, you know that the zest, or outer peel of the fruit, is the strongest. These muffins perfectly blend the cranberry and orange flavors, and they are not at all sour like you might expect when you see the berry used in this muffin is indeed a tart cranberry. The canned berries includes a sweetener, in the form of high fructose corn syrup, to cut the tartness of the berry.
