Last week on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, Josh Groban became the first artist to release a holiday album and reach the top in 13 years. Selling over 405,000 copies last week, he's the first since Kenny G in 1994 to top the Top 200.This week, the operatic pop singer is sitting high at the top the chart for a second week in a row. Though this time he has moved an even higher number than the last. Selling 540,000 copies this week, the holiday offering simply titled Noel is now set to be certified platinum in the U.S. (selling more than 1 million copies in the U.S. certifies an album platinum by the RIAA). In a nearly 34% sales increase, the album continues to pick up speed through this holiday shopping season.
The Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden bounces back from the fifth spot on the chart to tail Groban, coming in at No. 2 with yet another 314,000 copies sold. The album saw a 72% sales increase due to an appearance on TV's popular show "60 Minutes." The record has thus far been certified 3x platinum by the RIAA in the short amount of time of its release. The offering is still currently only available at Wal-mart and Sam Club stores.
Clive Davis' J Records' protege Alicia Keys slips down one more spot to No. 3 this week as she moves a very solid 255,000 copies despite a near 27% sales decrease. Davis has quoted Keys' As I Am to be some of the "best songs of her career" and that she doesn't "look to current trends" to write her music.
Quickly on its way to being certified Gold by the RIAA, Celine Dion's 13th English recording Taking Chances holds steady at No. 8 for the second week in a row selling a high 94,000 copies (Gold certification requires an album to sell at least 500,000 copies in the U.S.). The French Canadian chanteuse has now included the single of the same name in her Las Vegas extravaganza "A New Day..." for the final few weeks of its production. The show ends on December 15th after a strong almost five year run. Tuesday, December 11th, Dion will release a DVD of the show as it concludes that week.
