Phishing scams are pretty well-known in e-mails, but now scam artists are attacking people through instant messaging on computers and cell phones. So how does one protect himself against these vicious criminals? Unfortunately, it is easy to be tricked because the messages appear to come from family and friends and other people on your Buddy List, when they are actually from someone you don't know.

Close the Message Box

In most cases, you'll receive a link through your instant messaging system that invites you to look at pictures or a cool site that you might want to check out. The message will appear to come from someone you know, but this should send up red flags if your friends usually greet you first, rather than just sending a link. To ensure it isn't a scam, close the message box and send a new message through your buddy list. This should tell you if you've run into a phishing scam.

Ask Probing Questions

Your friends and family should know that it's wise to be security conscious when sending instant messages through computers and cell phones. To avoid phishing scams, ask questions of your friends and family that only they would know. For example, you could ask about a favorite pet or favorite band or the type of work they do. This establishes a secure relationship through the Internet so you don't have to worry.

Don't Enter Passwords

If you are fooled and click a link that isn't from who you think it is, never enter your e-mail address or password when prompted at the Web site. These are often clone sites for banks, social networking sites and other sensitive accounts where the scam artist is trying to acquire your information. If you think that something might be wrong with your account, type the URL directly into the bar on your browser rather than clicking on the offered link.
