Just as with any recreational activity or event, there are certain etiquette rules that apply to deer hunting. When you're out in the field or the woods with your fellow hunters, you are expected to behave as though you aren't an amateur hunter - even though you are. Following are a few rules for the road that can help you build deer hunting etiquette and fool even the most curmudgeonly of hunting buddies.Take That Safety Course
In some states and jurisdictions, safety courses are required prior to the deer hunting season, but even if they're not, it's a good idea to take them. You'll pick up on tips for etiquette as well as ways to keep yourself safe and secure while you're out in the field with a gun. Every amateur hunter should definitely take a safety course, but experienced hunters are likewise encouraged. It's always good to learn the new rules and refresh your memory.
Observe Safety Rules
It isn't enough to simply attend the safety course - you have to actually practice safety precautions. This means always pointing your gun away from the other hunters, keeping the safety in position until you're ready to shoot, and identifying yourself as a hunter when you get close to a different group. Deer hunting is always more fun when you practice proper safety and etiquette.
Clean Camping Grounds and Stands
I like to carry an energy bar into the deer stand with me, but I always put the wrapper in my pocket and take it with me when I leave. Good hunting etiquette requires that you always clean up your messes, regardless of where you are. Camping grounds, deer stands, blinds and other areas should look just as you left it - or better - when it's time to go home. And do your part by encouraging other amateur hunters to behave in the same manner.
