Second only to a house, an automobile is usually the second most expensive item the average person owns. Here are a few ways to take some of the pinch out of your wallet where the rubber meets the road.

The first place to save money is on the tire purchase. When your tires are worn they can be very expensive to replace. However most tire shops and all junk / salvage yards will sell you perfectly serviceable used tires for a small price. Unless you really do some extreme driving you don't need top dollar performance tires. Matched brand used tires are generally more than unmatched so ask for the prices and decide for yourself which way you want to go. If you are lucky the place you are charges the same price for all their used tires and you can go through them a pick out brand name tires that may last longer or tires with better tread. If you buy mismatched tires, you can avoid displaying them by just putting the whitewalls / white letters in and just show the black. For many people buying used carries a stigma that they can't get over, and that's fine I'll save money for fishing trips and retirement and they can spend theirs on tires. If you must buy new tires do your research before buying, there can be great differences in prices between dealers.
