Breast milk has long been the best way to nourish an infant. However, can it also play a role in providing nutrition and guarding against disease in adults as well? It would seem that if it prevents breastfed infants from contracting certain diseases and illness that it just may do the same for others as well. In fact, there are people who are using this controversial form of nourishment to help guard against certain illnesses and even to help fight certain diseases and conditions, like Cancer and Crohn's Disease. So, is there a real benefit?

Possible Benefits

While there is no documented evidence specifically on using breast milk in adults, there is however, a real possibility that breast milk compounds could cure cancer. In 1995, scientists at Lund University used a compound found in breast milk called human alpha-lactalbumin to kill brain tumor cells in a test tube. It seemed to have worked. The same research team, in 2004, used the breast milk compound to destroy many warts caused by HPV, creating the possibility that it could be used to treat cancer caused by HPV. Howard Cohen, diagnosed with prostate cancer, drinks breastmilk in smoothies and believes that it has helped put his cancer into remission. A woman named Patty uses breast milk to help treat her 15 year old son for Crohn's disease. She claims that using the breastmilk has helped to control her son's dietary habits and other symptoms, so that he could again return to a normal weight. Many Crohn's patients suffer weight loss from frequent bowel movements and other dietary symptoms.

Many believe breast milk can heal or help conditions such as cancer, Crohn's disease, infections, rashes, and more. Breast milk is already used by many as a topical agent for many different skin ailments, however drinking it beyond the infant stage is not widely discussed.

Hi Brentan. From what I gather, there are mixed thoughts on that. So to be safe, if a woman is HIV positive, it would not be wise to use her milk supply. However, if a woman is perfectly healthy, yes, breastmilk is known to prevent HIV and cancer. :-)

Hi. This is completely and totally interesting! Though is there a possibility of breastmilk transferring diseases like HIV? I've heard that it can, but I've also heard that breastmilk could help to prevent HIV infection, as well as cancer. I'm not going to test this by drinking from someone who is HIV positive, but does anyone know any firm evidence as to wheteher breastmilk could transfer HIV or whether it wouldn't. Because I was amazed when I learnt that an HIV positive mother can give birth to a HIV negative child, which shows how the human body will do every thing it can to protect the child from getting HIV, so I thought it makes sense that the body should make sure that no HIV is in the breastmilk? Thanks Dr. I thought it was a pretty interesting concept, too. :-)

What an interesting concept and article! Breast milk is full of antibodies that protect against disease and should have health benefits for all ages. Great contribution!

Antoinette, I'm afraid I wouldn't have the guts to try it either. Although, in starving situations or adverse health situations, you never know. True Shamontiel. I don't like the way they they treat those cows either. What an interesting story Lyn. Thanks for the feedback P.V.

Wow... who'da thought huh? I'm always a proponent of anything natural so I would be game for trying this!! When u think about how much nutrition it provides for babies, why not us? I think my mother in law told me about a book she read, and in it the woman fed her entire family with this during a war of some sort. Cool article!!

Momie Tullottes, I didn't know about this article until you told me about it, so I guess I'll be your next commenter (and I'm sure they won't stop any time soon). The whole idea of drinking breast milk grosses me out as much as drinking milk from cows. My father is lactose intolerant, my mother isn't much of a milk drinker, but my brother likes milk. I, on the other hand, only drink milk in Starbuck's hot chocolate, and that may be once a month. I am all about soy milk, primarily because I'm a vegetarian, but also because of the health benefits. However, if it will keep less cows from being chained to the ground and tied to their sides so their calf can feed on her, I'm all for it.

I have personally never tried to taste my own breatmilk but after knowing a few guys that seemed to like drinking their wives I had to ask the big question as to why. I was informed that after the actual milk itself comes in it has a sort of brown sugar taste to it. Even with being told that from some one who had done it, I still could not bring myself to try it. Great article on a subject that can either be seen as gross or natural depending on the individual.

I tasted some cereal that I had mixed with breastmilk when my son was still nursing without thinking first and I almost threw up when I realized that it was made with my own breastmilk. EW! ;) Extremely interesting topic and very well done!
