A Personal Account of Treatment for Mental Illness
Abilify, or aripriprazole, an atypical antipsychotic drug produced by Bristol Myers Squibb, has taken over my life and I couldn’t be more thrilled about that. Being an active mental patient with unfortunately a cumulative of about five different mental illness diagnoses, I have gone through the rounds with all types of medications. And while doing so, while experimenting with all the different brand names of all the different categories, I went back and forth between loving and hating medication in general. Mostly this was due to the side effects, particularly sleepiness, that each medication I tried seemed to cause. So I would neglect my mental health and go against my psychiatrist’s advice and I’d discontinue medications on my own, or I’d lessen the doses. And for many different intervals, I stopped seeing my doctor altogether, believing that no medication was going to work for me and it was just a waste of my time, money and precious brain cells.Then, Abilify, antipsychotic drug. To me, Abilify has been a miracle drug. And even though it has me on a string, for if I stop taking it I lose all control of myself and become a complete and total psychotic mess, it has been consistent and reliable over the past two years that I’ve been taking it.

Abilify was prescribed for my 7 year old daughter who has down syndrome. I am a little nervous about giving the medication. She has been aggressive and combative for a long time and it seems that she would be able to accomplish so much more if these things were not in the way. Should I be concerned about giving this medication?

I am starting abilif y tonigt. I am bi-polar 1. I have trust issues. I am on 160 mg of Geodon and my psy doctor was me to go cold turkey on my Geodonl I afraid I will go maniac. I stay tired all the time. I take lamictal, topamax, the geodon, zyprexa and many more for physical healthe one I have high blood pressure, and an over active bladder. So see I am comprimised in areas of my health. I would just like to know if theres is someone out there who has the same maybe like me.

MY SON IS 10 AND HE STARTED TAKING ABLIFY 4 DAYS AGO AND IT IS DOING WONDERS WITH NO PROBLEMS HE IS SO CALM BUT NOT TIRED I NOTICE THE DIFFERENCE ALREADY

The Abilify did not work out as my son eyes started drifting up and sticking when he was on it...we moved on to Zyprexa and the same thing happened...

My son has Down Syndrome and has recently started Abilify...he is almost 8 years old and was just all around hyper and aggressive...we are seeing great results..he is getting good reports in school now and on the bus...I am so happy for him..he is much calmer at home and follows directions much better also...

The only things that get rid of my worst symptoms are abilify and haldol, and i'd rather not take haldol. Thanks for the story

Yes, abilify is a miracle drug, and as for me, a little bit goes a long, long way. I am no longer under the mantle of a dark and pressing cloud, and I truly think that, however it works, abilify is a miracle for biological depression. I have had mental illness since childhood, and tried so many drugs. Abilify is both gentle and effective, and yes, I agree, it does not add to the very symptom which is most debilitating, constant sleepiness. Abilify in no way makes you tired, nor does it give other debilitating side effects. It acts almost invisibly, and all you notice is the black cloud is gone. I think abilify stops me from willing myself to self destructivity. It keeps me from ending up in that deep dark hole that I have not the natural means to escape, which is chronic, debilitating depression.

My son with down syndrome/mild mentardation has been diagnosed with ocd,opposition disorder, paranoid and have experience different types of other drug but only made him sleepy all the time and only took life out of him. He is now taking only 10mg Abilify and 100mg Seroquel at night which knocks him out. Do feel I need to take him off the Seroquel and change the doses of Abilify because of the very bad anger outburst with parnoial when confronted about behavior...I need some advice

my son has just been given abilify. he is eleven years old, and has adhd along with oppostional behaviors and ocd behaviors. has anyone had any experience with this drug for someone as young as my son? please comment. www.angelderuvo@aol.com
As with any acute illness, finding the treatment that works best for each person is a big gamble ~ This sounds like a great addition to the options out there. I have people close to me with the same medical needs, and will pass along this great information. Thank you for sharing!
