While our soldiers are off risking their lives at war, their spouses are left to be everything to their children, do everything for their household and maintain a positive outlook whenever their warrior calls home. It is not surprising that many military spouses suffer from depression and anxiety disorders during deployments.

How does one balance their children's needs, their household management, their soldier's encouragement and their own mental state? That is a question without an answer.

And what about the holidays?

Army wives Elizabeth (Lizzie) Barbour and Brittany Werner have chosen to boycott Christmas. Lizzie's husband, Michael (Mike) Barbour has been serving in Afghanistan since February. He is due home from war in the spring. Brittany's husband Phillip (Phil) is serving in Iraq and is due back in the summer.

Lizzie and Brittany met through MySpace, each seeking a friend in their new homes at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Brittany is from Seattle, Washington and Lizzie is from my house, here in Martinsburg, West Virginia. Lizzie is my oldest daughter. I have personally witnessed this amazing friendship blossom between these two young ladies and they have fast become best friends.

Last week, Lizzie moved into Brittany's house. She and Phil are in the process of buying a home in Fayetteville, North Carolina. When Phil came home for R&R in October, they began the process by renting to own their home. When he gets home from Iraq, they will close on the house, using their rental payments as a down payment on their loan.

Understandable. When one family member is in the military, the whole family wears the uniform.

Charlotte.. I am so glad you said what you said. I don't think people realize that a soldier needs money for anything during deployments.

Thanks Kelly, Christine, Amber, Charlotte, Jody & Pam. This was a difficult article to write because my emotions over potentially not having my grandchildren here for Christmas kept creeping in. I was finally able to remove all that and was pretty pleased with the result. I'm glad people have enjoyed this.

Great article. I am so glad my Air Force man retired this summer!

Very nice piece. Kelly took the words right out of my mouth, it is a blessing that they found one another.

Nicely done piece. I still remember those times when my husband was deployed as well. It was difficult. One house I rented for the children and myself was so cold in the winter that I had to dress them in three layers of clothing for bed and we all slept together to keep warm. But it was all we could afford. Because we had to households to pay for - - his and ours - - even food was a premium. I worked all day, seven days a week and as many evenings as I could just to put food on the table. I don't eny those days and I certainly feel for those still living through them.

It's horrible that there are so many problems for the families of those at war. It's bad enough that their loved ones have to be so far away. The government should take care of them somehow. I'm so glad that they at least found each other.

Hi Judith. Nice to see you here again. This is a thought provoking piece.

Nicely written piece. It's a blessing that these women have found one another for support, but a shame that they are feeling so low. I'll be thinking of them this holiday season.
