Recently, a story appeared on the news about a 22-year-old man who lost his life when hit by a semi-truck driver while he was walking early in the morning when it was still dark outside.

What is it now a days with people walking on roads or highways. They are either walking right on the road or highway, and not walking on the gravel or pavement where cars can pull over. I know it is hard to walk on gravel, so if you have to walk on gravel, only do so when a car is not coming. Th
is will prevent you from getting sore feet or twisting and ankle. As for walking on the highway or interstate most of the emergency pull over areas are paved or black topped. I find it most helpful if walking on a highway to walk against traffic. That way you and the vehicle both can see each other. Also if you have to be on the road or highway/interstate. Wear light clothes especially at night with something that is reflective, such as reflective tape on your sleeves, legs, shoes, your top, etc. Make yourself as noticeable to oncoming traffic.

I don't know how many times I have been driving on the highway or interstate and saw someone at the last second who was wearing dark clothing. It is fine during the day but, at night an oncoming vehicle can not see you. If your car broke down and you need to be on the highway, make sure you have packed light reflective clothing (for not only you, but other members of the family if you have one) in the trunk of your car and also carry a flashlight. These are all things that can help save your life. If you have a cell phone, call for help and stay in your car, unless there is a chance of a fire with your engine. Make sure you have your flashers on and now a days keep your doors locked and windows closed. Do not open your window or doors to just anyone. If you don't feel you can trust the person that stopped to help, do not open your window or door, just show them that you have a cell phone and help is on the way. Thank them and leave it at that.

We recently had an older child killed when walking on a country road with a group of friends. This was in Daylight of course. In our town pedestrians have the right of way and don't feel the need to get out of the road. But what I find more frustrating is that land owners would rather have people walk in the road than on the two foot section of grass, which truly does not twist ankles (having walked on it). This is some great advice and reminds me I need to teach my kids to wear light clothes.

You have covered this topic so well. I can't tell you how many times (like you) that I didn't see a pedestrian or someone on a bicycle, until the very last minute. And it's so amazing how many pedestrians will not get to the side of the road if a car is coming. I just don' t understand it. About your surgery, I hope all is well, and I wanted to tell you that I had therapy for a torn rotator cuff (shoulder) and the therapist pulled on my neck to get an assessment (hurt like the dickens), and ever since I have had numbness in my fingertips, particularly the right hand. I reported him to management, and complained about his careless, rough treatment, and had to drop out of therapy, (and the therapy was actually helping my shoulder quite a bit)-until he pulled up hard on my neck. Ridiculous, isn't it? I'd love to hear more about your situation when you're able to write! I guess it will be awhile. Hugs-Lonnette

Good tips. I always walk on the sidewalk.

Very good advice. I use to teach Road safety to schools in UK.

I'm amazed when I see people walking at night on the road without a vest, etc. It amazes me that they don't understand how hard it is to see them. Nice job:)

You have done a great service in writing this. A year after I graduated from high school, my best friend at the time was walking along a road and was killed by a driver who wasn't even drunk but simply didn't see her. Important topic and info! Ever since then, I make sure my kids wear reflective strips on their jackets and don't go out at night in all dark clothing.
