Hard to believe now, but A Christmas Story was not a huge hit when it came out in 1983. Roger Ebert called it "cloying" and, while a modest hit, there was nothing to suggest that it would one day become a tradition that TBS aired it 24 hours in a row on Christmas Day. Even I didn't get around to seeing it until it hit theaters in a re-release the next year, 1984. My wife tells me that I was laughing so much in my signature high-pitched giggle that two people actually walked down the aisle to see who was doing all the laughing. Another thing that is hard to believe is that the kid actors who populated A Christmas Story didn't all go on to longer careers. I mean Flick, Schwartz and the gang should at least have had a career as long as the Home Alone or Sixth Sense kids. So just what exactly did happen to the Christmas Story kids?

Peter Billingsley-Ralphie

The actor playing the kid who wanted nothing but an official Red Ryder carbine-action two-hundred-shot range model air rifle went on to appear in a few more movies and a handful of TV shows until he reached the point where he just really wasn't all that cute anymore. His most recent appearances were in Elf and The Break-Up (he's quite good friends with actor Vince Vaughn). He was also an executive producer of The Break-Up. In fact, producing is what Billingsley does most nowadays, having worked behind the scenes on Zathura and Iron Man as well.

Scott Schwartz-Flick

Like the lost Winslow daughter from Family Matters, the kid whose tongue got stuck to a frozen flag pole wound up in the porn industry. There's a joke there, of course, but I'm far too much of a gentlemen to give in. Schwartz claims to have left the adult film biz behind, but the news of where he wound up is even more distressing: working with Pauly Shore.

By the way, you've likely heard that the original house where they filmed in Cleveland is a museum now that gets thousands of tourists each year. Interesting that the interiors were filmed elsewhere--yet the museum remodeled the interiors of the house to resemble the interiors in the film.

At least you stand alone on articles about "ACS" cast updates without having to deal with a 24-hour onslaught of similar ones on a Google search. ;) Hopefully yours rises to the top. Well, I didn't see the film in theaters when it first came out (I was about 12 then)--though I should have. I remember hearing about it at the time, but I didn't get a chance to sit down and watch it all the way through until probably the late 80's when it started airing on local stations (before the Turner cable grab). The film hasn't affected me as deeply as some people--while still enjoying it a lot nonetheless for its tongue-in-cheekness.™ ;)

This rules. No offense to other featured writers, but this is by far the coolest holiday write-up I've seen on AC in 2007.

I love "A Christmas Story"!! I watch it every year! I never really knew what happened to any of the characters. I am surprised to hear that it wasn't a hit from the beginning. It seems like I've been watching it forever, but i was born in 1984, so I've been watching it since I was little. By far, this movie is the best Christmas movie to watch. It's always so funny and it never gets old. It's like a running joke.

Billingsley is as cute as he ever was! Interesting you mention Zathura. There's a scene in that movie where a child character is under pressure to make a wish and instead of wishing for what you think he's going to, he wishes for a football instead. I can't help but think that Billingsley added that as a little joke and how many people got it.

We just watched this movie last weekend! It's interesting to know where the actors ended up. It's almost like finding out what your old classmates are doing now.
