Non-sailing yachts are also referred to as motor yachts. This is to make the difference between yachts designed for use with sail power. Motor Yachts usually have a comfortable feel to them. Their cabins have configurations that are built on the suite concept. Most motor yacht suites offer two staterooms separated by the entire length of the yacht, with a spacious living area in between. The cabins of many yachts are akin to actual suites in hotels.
A motor yacht is basically a large boat that is powered by either diesel or gasoline engines. Motor yachts can range vastly in size from motor yachts as small as 27 feet and as large as 80. The average size of a motor yacht is reportedly around 44 feet. Motor yachts are powered by premium gasoline or diesel. Most yachts average 300 gallon gas tanks. The boats themselves get about half to three-fourths miles to the gallon.
There is a basic common opinion within the yachting community that a motor yacht’s worth is the dimensions of her flybridge, sundeck, and covered aft-deck. These yachts are designed for size and comfort. On a sizable motor yacht the open bridge seats eight. The yacht’s foredeck and sheltered aft-deck usually open.
The typical cruising speed for a yacht is approximately in the 20 knot range. This is with average weight conditions and sea state. Top speeds can be between 25 and 30 knots depending on the model of the yacht. This, again, is with average load conditions. Higher cruise and top end speeds are available on some models especially those used for racing.
