Best Buy is a big box electronics store that gets a lot of mileage by advertising the Geek Squad, but what exactly do they do?

The answer, in my case anyway, is I am sure sure.

Blame me for purchasing my third laptop at Best Buy. I am not sure why I keep returning. Maybe their name makes me think they really offer the best value, but I am not sure it is true. I probably keep returning because they have a variety of stuff, and are convenient.

When my first two laptops quit on me, the obtuse "no can fix, no can do" attitude of the Geek Squad personnel drove me nuts, leading to angry exchanges.

I promised myself, never again, but last year, I fell for it again. You might wonder why, but I had discovered a new, smaller store with accommodating staff, that seemed a cut above the other Best Buy stores in my area.

When I purchased the new laptop, I purchased the best service agreement, which covered problems including ones that were my fault, such as spilling a liquid of shutting a pen under the cover. The service agreement added about $300 to the cost of the laptop, but it has turned out to be worth it.

The laptop has been in twice for repairs, which would have cost that much to fix, so the service contract has paid for itself. The problem? They do not do the work at the store. The computer has to be sent out, which means about a month without the laptop.

I also get irritated when I take the laptop in for service. because the Geek Squad guy always tries to collect a fee for looking at the computer. I have to repeat at least three times that it is under a service contract. Best Buy management is probably cheering at that information.

I use my laptop all the time, mostly for business, and cannot afford to be without it. Needless to say, being without the computer for a few weeks is a major hassle.

During the most recent repair, the keyboard was replaced. The number two key broke off within a couple of days, which is not right. It is not like I was pounding on the key. At first I thought, well OK, how often do I use the two key. The answer to that question is "a lot".

Toshiba Laptop is missing the two key. Permission granted for use with this article.

I bought my new computer at Best Buy. I have had it a little over two months and it started shuttting down on its own. I thought maybe I had gotten a virus somehow and ran all types of antivirus software. They did not find anything. I took the side of the case off to check and make sure all the fans were running. The video card fan had quit. I called Acer and they said I had to take it to Best But to be fixed under warranty. That was Wednesday. They guy said he would have it done today since we already knew what the problem was. Go today to check and they get smart and say it will be 3-10 days. They had to diagnose it still which will take 16-24 hours. Told them while my computer was down it was costing me money. I cannot work without it. They said in their wisdom to buy another back up computer. That is why I bought a new one so I wouldn't need a back up. I will never buy anything that has to go to Best Buy for repairs.

They charge you a fortune and do cute commercials with their little slug bug. They are overrated and aggravating.

This is good to know.

By the way, ask for service people with A+ Certified credentials from legitimate college. They will know how to fix what you have wrong like a smaller computer store that is local, Computer Renaissance is a great one in many locations with local service.

Best buy lies and is a terrible place for anything that you require to get fixed. I actually caught them lying to me, sales person says I can replace laptop battery at any time no matter what during service contract. Almost three years later when I got the reminder that the service contract was ending soon I packed up the laptop walked in and was told that there was no way I was getting a new battery unless the old one was completely dead. I even brought sales person over who told me I could get a replacement two minutes after I walked away from service counter, egg on face of sales when service told him he cannot tell people that. Battery has to be dead, and no go on new one anyway after they said the salesman was lying to me. Oh he was mistaken...

I'm not sure what the magical attraction is to Best Buy but it does exist. I could say what I think the Geek Squad is, but I'll be nice. Sorry you had to learn the hard way. :-(

Yes, Christine, I do know and you won't like the answer. They come to your house and run useless, time consuming checks on all aspects of your computer that are running fine, fail to find the problem, and charge you a fortune. They are not well trained at troubleshooting, more of a plug in and set up qualified group. We were extremely dismayed from our extended experience dealing with them, particularly their lack of expertise and their try everything because we have no idea what might work approach.

Glad you addressed this. I'll stick to my computer repair guy...His business is the only one I know that doesn't charge to look at and diagnose the problem. They do that and give you an estimate, then you decide what you want them to do. Amazing, huh? Better than the Geek Squad.
