According to a press release today, December 11, 2007, from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, there has been a recall of certain Xplory Baby Strollers due to a possible falling hazard when the front wheel could detach from the stroller.

The Xplory Baby Stroller's front wheels were manufactured in China. Approximately 1,200 of the strollers made in Norway were distributed by Stokke LLC, of Kennesaw, Georgia. The strollers were sold at Stokke distributors and various Web sites and juvenile product retailers nationwide from September 2003 through December 2006. Each stroller was sold for about $770.

The reason for the voluntary CPSC recall is that a bolt, that attaches each front wheel to the stroller, can loosen. This could possibly make one of the front wheels fall off, causing a fall hazard to young children sitting in the stroller.

This recall only involves certain Xplory baby strollers. The recalled strollers have serial numbers between 1 and 28,097 and have grey handles. You will find the serial number located under the foot plate. The Xplory Baby strollers with white handles are not included in this recall.

So far there have been a total of 14 reported incidents of one of the front wheels of the stroller falling off. One reported case involved a child who received a scratch when she fell out of the stroller. There have been a total of 244 reported incidents outside of the United States of one of the front wheels falling off the Xplory Baby Stroller.

If you have this Xplory Baby Stroller, you should immediately stop using it. A free replacement of the front wheels is available from Stokke. Stokke will contact all known customers who purchased the stroller by email or regular mail. They have sent notices to their retailers and posted a recall notice on their web site in May 2007. Some customers have already received replacement wheels or are in the process of receiving the wheels. If you have previously contacted Stokke, there is no reason for you to contact them again.

When will companies learn to make sure their products are safe BEFORE selling them to the public? Great coverage.

Yikes! You'd hope that a $770 stroller would be safer!
