I once read a book by Kathleen Tessaro called Elegance. It became one of my favorite books, and it got me started thinking; What is elegance to a woman?  It is many things encompassed in one word.  But certainly most of all, elegance is that sacred 'something' every woman wishes she had.  We look at pictures of Angelina Jolie, and Cameron Diaz, and we wonder what gives them that knowing little smile.  They look so sure of themselves, and elegant, seemingly without even trying.  How does one achieve that, especially if you can't afford a personal trainer, a therapist, and three nannies?  Different women have different routes to finding their elegance, and some of us get stalled along the way, by life-kids, work, and catching up on sleep.  To some of us elegance may mean a certain air; a way we'd like to carry ourselves, or the way we'd like to be viewed by others.  To others it can mean a feeling of serenity with our bodies, our pride in ourselves.  For all the definitions of elegance, there's no doubt some women know they have it, and some women don't.  For all the single mothers, the working wives, and every woman in between, here are some basic ideas to uncover your elegance.

My description of an "elegant woman" has always been as follows: 1)She can attend a black-tie affair and hold conversations with world leaders and dignitaries about topics ranging from foreign policy to sports, while slipping in an ocassional "dirty joke" or two (sorry April!) 2)She would rip off her ball gown halfway through the event, exposing a HOT and SEXY form fitting mini-dress, and we'd head for the nearest and HOTTEST nightclub to dance seductively with each other for several hours; 3)After the dance, we'd go home, change clothes and board a plane bound for Africa.....to go and help feed babies dying of AIDS. Beauty must not only be displayed physically, it must radiant from the soul as well. That is TRUE elegance in my book. GREAT ARTICLE!!!! (+5)

I enjoyed your article very much. Another book I'd recommend is "The Art and Power of Being a Lady." The most elegant woman I have known had her own sense of style, however, it wasn't what she wore or how she looked on the outside that projected elegance. She spoke with articulate grace, stood up for her beliefs, and laughed in the face of life's curveballs. When she entertained she had a way of making everyone comfortable and satisfied. She laughed easy and smiled often. A truly elegant woman.

I would like to add one thing -- the allure of elegance can be shattered by a woman's speech. Heels, swaying hips, perfect make-up, and self confidence don't mean a thing if you open your mouth and out comes "YOU DAWG" or "sh** man" or some other totally un-ladylike phrase. I've seen it a thousand times, and the whole "ambience" of elegance is killed in the wake of slang or vulgar language.
