Nintendo DS Becomes the Best-Selling Videogame System of 2007

In a press release, Nintendo reveals that the Nintendo DS is the best-selling videogame system in 2007.

Launching in November 21st, 2004, the Nintendo DS manages to sell more and more with each passing year. More than 6 million units were sold this year alone; not to mention that we still have one month to go. For every 5 second in 2007, a Nintendo DS is sold. In total, the Nintendo DS has sold well over 50 million units in just 3 years.

Nintendo has always had a monopolistic-type of hold on the handheld gaming market as the Nintendo Game Boy line have crushed all of the competition in the past. It wasn't until Sony and the PSP (Playstation Portable) until Nintendo started to be a bit stirred.

Sales were close between the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. It wasn't until a re-release of the Nintendo DS, called the Nintendo DS Lite, in 2006 that Nintendo managed to pull away from Sony in terms of sales.

Part of the reason that the Nintendo DS succeeded is because of the game selection. The typical Nintendo games are all on the Nintendo DS. Hardcore Nintendo fans have their hands full playing the latest Nintendo franchise iterations in Animal Crossing: Wild World, Mario Kart DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, New Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

The Nintendo DS also have a huge selection of niche games that appeal to the hardcore gamers. Games like Elite Beat Agents, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and the Phoenix Wright series are so unique that there are no other games like it on other systems.

Much of the success of the Nintendo DS can be accredited to casual games. Games like Brain Age, Nintendogs and other training games appeal to people who don't usually play videogames. The Nintendo DS is immensely popular among the non-gamer demographic, mostly containing of women and the elderly.
