Some people have a knack for finding great things at flea markets and thrift stores. Even without being blessed with this natural ability you can still increase your chances of finding something extraordinary if you know a few things.Don't bring your entire wallet with you and always make sure you have cash. Having small bills makes negotiating prices easier. You don't want to tell the vendor you only have $15 and then pull out a $20. Just in case you find a big ticket item for a great price keep a blank check or credit card in your pocket.
Make sure you are dressed comfortably. You're not going to want to spend the time you need to really look around if you are thinking the whole time about how you can't wait to go home and take your shoes off. Bring a bottle of water if the flea market is outside on a hot day.
If you are looking for a specific piece that need to fit somewhere in your home make sure you bring a measuring tape. You may think something looks like it would fit only to be disappointed later.
In your car keep some old blankets or maybe even some bubble wrap. Many vendors will have bubble wrap for small delicate items but you want to be sure.
Find out what time the flea market opens and arrive as early as possible. The best stuff goes fast and the hardcore collectors know what they want and will be there early looking for it.
Make sure you look at everything before you make a final decision. However, if you do come across something you absolutely love and decide you must have it, be sure not to wait. Most flea market items are one of a kind and there is no promising it will still be there when you come back.
Look over each item carefully before buying. Make sure they are in good condition with no cracks, flaws or too many signs of wear. You can use the cost of repairing at item to bargain and get the vendor to lower the price, but be sure the item is really worth it.
If you are looking for a specific item, do your research first. You'll want to know what to look for and how much you should expect to spend on it. Don't get ripped off.
If you can, bring a friend with you. They are sure to notice things you would have overlooked on your own.
