Only farmers who grazed their animals in the higher mountain valleys still used the surefooted Water Dog.Although around for several centuries, it wasn't until 1980 that the dog was noticed. If not for the efforts of Antonio Garcia Perez, it may have continued on as an obscure breed. Due to Perez's efforts, the Spanish Water Dog became officially recognized five years later.
The Water Dog is a well proportioned animal, which is hard to decipher because of its profuse, wiry coat. Its head tends to be flatter in profile than most breeds, which bears very expressive eyes. The nose is usually a shade or two darker than the coat. This breed sports a short, well muscled neck. Overall, the body gives it a strong, robust appearance which suit's the Water Dog , as it is used primarily for work.
The coat is quite curly, and bears a wooly texture which is not unpleasant to the touch. Fur is usually cut short, otherwise it will cord. Puppies are born with ringlets, which later evolves into ideal protection against the elements. It insulates the dog from colder temperatures. The Water Dog is primarily chestnut, white, and black with all shades in between. Bi-colored dogs are not frequently seen.
This breed is highly intelligent, and has proven itself to be a stable working companion. Many still retain strong herding instincts, and make natural guard dogs. The Water Dog does well with children, and proves itself both loyal and affectionate. They are sweet animals, who may act reserved around strangers.
