I can tell you that I was more than psyched, to put it not so technically, when I first heard whispers of a J.J. Abrams monster movie. I am a ginormous fan of the old school Godzilla movies, due to the influence of an older sister who was well schooled in the ways of pop culture. As a kid, watching a monster movie that involves a giant dinosaur, moth, or robot was just about as cool as it got. Even though they were some of the cheesiest movies on the planet, they still freaked me out a little bit. And I loved the miniatures and the suits and the random musical numbers, and I had quite the soft spot for Godzilla himself. (You know he was usually the good guy, right?) So naturally, when I saw media insinuating that I was going to get another 'giant monster attacking a city' movie, I thought, "Cool!". All the media coming off of J.J. Abrams Cloverfield seemed too great to be true. I thought that I was finally going to get what Roland Emmerich's Godzilla promised but did not deliver. (I still owned it though, any Godzilla is a good Godzilla...) I thought maybe Abrams would get to expand on some of his mysterious island creature concepts from Lost. This week when I saw the trailer, I had some unexpected emotions surface as I watched it. I wanted to voice these questions before I saw the movie, because this is the first time a movie has made me feel this way before I've even seen it.
