New Year's Eve is a night for celebrations, and a time many of us look forward to the upcoming year with hope and resolutions. New Year's Eve is also a time many of else indulge in good food, and wine, ringing in New Year's day with close friends and family. But picking out a good bottle of inexpensive Champagne can be hard for novices, and even for those who consider themselves connoisseur of fine wines. I asked Sterling Pratt, wine director at Schaefer's Wine, Foods, and Spirits located in Skokie, ILL for suggestions for Champagnes, under $25.00 dollars this New Year's Eve, and other questions.

True champagne comes from France, at least, according to Mr. Pratt, is what the French would want us to believe. Champagne is also a region located in France, and it is in this particular region where true champagne is made. Wanting a champagne that would be affordable to the average person, Mr. Pratt went on to explain that because true champagne tended to be over my $25.00 dollar limit, our best bet for finding what I needed would be to look toward California, where copies of French champagnes are usually made. Here is Mr. Pratt five recommendations for a good bottle of Champagne under $25.00.

First Recommendation for Champagne under $25.00, Roedrer

Mr Pratt's first recommendation is from a French company that makes champagne in California, and it is called Roedrerer. This Champagne is priced at $24.97.

Second Recommendation for Champagne under $25.00, Gruet

Mr. Pratt's second recommendation is from New Mexico, and this champagne is called Gruet. It is priced at $13.97

Third Recommendation for Champagne under $25.00, Luis Bouillot

Mr. Pratt's third recommendation is from France, and this Champagne is called Luis Bouillot. It is priced at $15. 97. One reason this French champagne is so inexpensive is because the champagne is made in a part of France where "true champagne" is not usually made.

Fourth Recommendation for Champagne under $25.00, Marque de Gelida.

I do not drink, which is why I ask someone whose job it is to know about Champagne and wine for recommendations. The recommendations are specific, unless you meant something else. Also just because a Champagne is inexpensive does not compromises its taste or quality. I am glad Madeline mentioned the Sparkling wine, I did not mention it in the article, but Champagne made outside of the Champagne region in France is called Sparkling wine, butis still basically Champagne. Go figure.

What help to list specific brands. Are there certain types of wines you enjoy as well?

Great article! I've been interested in cheap champagnes for quite a while but have never known enough to risk buying something awful. Thanks for the recommendations!

I really like a lot of the Spanish sparkling wines I've tried, especially Segura Viudas Heredad. Yes . . . the French are real sticklers for the "Champagne" appellation. The laws are very strict--"true Champagne" can only be produced in the Champagne region of France. I've even heard that a vineyard could have grapes from one side of a hill approved for use in champagne, and the other not because of the amount of sunlight the crop receives. (Picky, picky! . . . yet the quality is outstanding even though the price is high.) This is a really nice review of affordable options for the New Year. Great suggestions and an informative article.
