Cedarlane Natural Foods of Carson, California, has issued an emergency allergy alert and immediate voluntary recall of Cedarlane Low Fat Bean Rice & Cheese style Burritos. A routine review uncovered the mistake and all packages of the product have been removed from store shelves and should no longer be available for sale. They will be shipped back to the company immediately. The food recall affects all stores nationwide and the product has been sold in all 50 states. If you have the product in your home, Cedarlane Natural Foods advises you to return the item to the store immediately for a full refund whether the product is opened or not before June 1, 2008.
The reason for the recall is undisclosed casein (a type of milk protein). The burritos contain casein which is not included in the list of ingredients on the packaging, nor is it listed under the allergy alert on the packaging. Persons with sensitivities to casein or other dairy products may experience a mild to serious allergic reaction. No persons have thus far been reported as affected by the product.
Cedarlane Low Fat Bean Rice & Cheese style Burritos can be purchased individually in 6 oz film-wrapped packages or by the carton. Each "family pack" carton contains eight 6 oz individually film-wrapped packages.
The packages affected are those with a printed "best by" date of "062808A" (June 28, 2008) through "082908A" (August 29, 2008). The code may be printed in the bottom right hand corner of the packaging and is listed after the cooking instructions.
If the burritos were purchased by the carton, the "best by" code can be located at the bottom of the right hand side panel. The code on the cartons is similar to the code on the individual packages but does not contain the letter "A".
