Uncommon Dog Breeds: Dandie Dinmont Terrier
It's growing popularity is easy to understand. The Dandie possesses a comical expression on a monkey like face which appeals to many. The body is longer than it is tall, with a overall structure similar to the dachshund. It has a solid head with a pronounced top knot. It's eyes are usually hazel in coloring.
The Dandie has a mixed coat of both coarse and silky hair. Fur along the belly, on the head, and ears is extremely soft to the touch. Coat colors don't vary, with pepper and mustard shades being the only present. Puppies are born dark, and lighten with age.
This fun-loving character is full of lively spunk. The Dandie is a comic at heart, and when not showering its owner with affection, is making him laugh. Like all terrier breeds, it is independent, and shows great cunning. Since it was used for badger hunting in days past, this little dog is a brave soul who may attempt to take on a larger animal. Nothing scares it.
It makes a natural watch dog, having a surprisingly deep bark for its size. Strangers are usually given the cold shoulder. The Dandie is protective of both its home and family. It does well with children, but may nip if the youngster becomes too rough with it.
Some males may exhibit aggression, or dominance, towards other male dogs while females get along with most canines. Due to its prey drive, the Dandie should never be trusted with non-canine pets. The exception includes cats. If raised with one from 'puppy hood', no problems should occur.
