A healthy dog must have healthy teeth. This means that their teeth should be clear of tarter. As an owner there are several things you can do to prevent tarter build-up on your dog's teeth. It's actually much easier to prevent tarter build-up than to remove it from your dog's teeth. That's why it's important to follow these steps and keep your dog's teeth healthy and free from tarter build-up.

The first step you must follow to prevent tarter build-up is to watch what you feed your pet. First of all, limit wet dog food to special occasions. Wet dog food can quickly cause tarter build-up. On the other hand, crunchy pet food helps to prevent tarter build-up. Wet dog food, when given as a treat is fine, but you should limit wet food intake to once a week or even less.

Another way to prevent tarter build-up by watching what you feed your pet is to avoid table scraps. Human food can quickly cause tarter build-up on dog's teeth. If you want your dog's teeth to stay nice and clean, don't give them your leftovers. Not only will this help to prevent tarter build-up, but it will also prevent upset stomachs and other health complications.

Another easy way to prevent tarter build-up on your dog's teeth is to buy them treats. There are several treats that are made to keep your dog's teeth healthy and clean. The best treats to help prevent tarter build-up include rawhide and Denta Bones. Both of these treats require pets to chew for long periods of time. As they chew on these treats, tarter that has built up throughout the day is removed.

The last way you can help prevent tarter build-up on your dog's teeth is to brush their teeth. There are two ways you can go about doing this. You can use baking soda and a wash cloth or a pet toothbrush and beef flavored toothpaste. Either brushing technique is an easy way to prevent tarter build-up. Just be sure that the process is gentle and doesn't panic your pet.

NEVER USE BAKING SODA OR HUMAN TOOTHPASTE. The extremely high sodium content, esp in baking soda can lead to heart problems in dogs. Use vet approved dog toothpaste only.

Chicken wings are good too - but they must be given to the dog raw (they are dangerous if they are cooked).

Cute doggie in your picture! We actually do brush our golden retriever's teeth, and the vet cleans them (under anesthetic once a year). Good info here, Amy!
