The Jena 6 Controversy
When 6 black teenagers were charged with the beating of Justin Barker, a white teenager at Jena High School in Jena, Louisiana, the cities long history of racial indifference came to light and was put on display on a national scale. To no one's surprise the Jena 6 were just the latest in a series of hate crimes that had occured throughout 2006, but the real controversy did not occur until September of 2007 where anyone and everyone with an interest in news about race crimes and racial injustice took to the streets of the small town and protested the arrests and charges of the black teenagers. It was a media spectacle concerning race we hadn't seen since the original O.J. Simpson trail back in the early nineties, and was one of the largest racial protests of the 21st century.
Have we learned anything from the Jena 6; this writer tried to avoid talking about this story but got pulled into it once the enormous outpouring of support was too large to ignore. Why don't African-Americans get together and show such solidarity and support at any other time, why does it take something like the Jena 6 occurance to bring us together. About as many questions as to what it means to be Black in America as there were answers, but it was great to see the topic of injustice on the table once again.
