Depending on the hole in the stucco, you may have to do some prep work before beginning. First, remove any stucco that is crumbing around the edge of the hole. If the hole is the result of an alteration of the exterior of home, such as removing a door or window, you may have to add foundation materials before applying the stucco.
For such a hole, you should first patch the area with building paper and sheathing. The appropriate types will vary according to the climate and code that your state follows, so check the local building office if you are unsure.
Next, use metal lath to provide a good foundation for the stucco. You should be able to cut the stucco with aviation snips and attach it to the studs underneath the building paper and sheathing. It is important to use galvanized roofing nails that are at least 1 1/2" for this step, and space them no more than 6 inches apart. Be sure to overlap the metal lath by at least 2 inches if you must use more than one piece to cover the hole you wish to patch.
After the foundation for the patch is complete, you should mix some stucco for a brown coat. Directions for this step will vary according to the manufacturer, so be sure to follow their instructions to get the proper mix for the patch job. Then apply with a trowel it in a layer that is about ¼ " lower than the surround stucco surface. The brown coat must cure for two days, but you should mist it every few hours with a spray bottle to be sure that it is curing correctly.
Finally you can apply the finish coat to complete your patch job. This should be mixed according to the instructions of your particular manufacturer. Before applying it once again mist the brown coat. Then carefully apply the finish coat, trying to match in depth and texture the surrounding wall. You should mist the finish coat with water every few hours for a week as it cures.
