Light snow started falling at about two o'clock on Thursday here along the coast in southern Maine. This is the northern fringe of a bigger storm that just hit southern New England pretty hard. The states of southern New England received a nasty mix of sleet and snow. It some places like the Boston area as much as a foot of snow accumulated, while other locales had lesser amounts, but just as many problems. However, this storm was not a very, big concern to most residents of Maine. The four to six inches of the light and fluffy variety that we just received in southern Maine was little more than a minor nuisance for most residents. The snow arrived around two o'clock this afternoon and was done with by midnight, barely leaving a plowable amount in its wake. It took only a quick brush-off with the long end of an ice-scrapers to clear the white stuff from one's vehicle. Despite the fact that this snowstorm deposited more goods than predicted, which even caused a few cancellations, it will likely turn out to be nothing but a minor event in the lives of residents of the southeastern corner of Maine.
Sunday's forecast is a completely different matter. Already the weather forecasters have predicted 20' foot seas and 50 mile-an-hour wind gusts at the coastline, along with moderate to heavy snow. In other words, if this prediction holds true, all of Maine will be experiencing a full-blown Nor'easter on Sunday. Briefly, these are intense low pressure systems that usually from off the Carolina coast and then travel in a northern direction staying just east of the mainland. The counter-clockwise rotation of the storm, produces very intense and cold northeasterly winds and treacherous seas. They typically form in winter and usually bring blizzard conditions to much of New England and Atlantic Canada.
