Wanted Haqqani Network Member, Mullah Sangeen, Killed by Coalition Forces
As reported by Combined Joint Forces in Afghanistan, a senior member of the Haqqani Network was killed by Coalition and Afghan forces during a mission. The name o
f the Haqqani member was Mullah Sangeen, and it is stated that he was second in command to Siraj Haqqani. Siraj is a militant commander that is over the Haqqani opereations in the eastern part of Afghanistan.
Improvised explosive device bombings and attacks on military forces are some of the charges facing Sangeen. He is one of two Haqqani operations workers to be found in the last month and a half. The other Haqqani associate was killed in late October.
The price on Sangeen's head was $20,000, but it is not stated who will get the money since it was a military operation. The price for Haqqani is $200,000. Both rewards are offered by the U.S.
"That we would get two Haqqani sub-commanders so close together certainly raises an eyebrow and begins to make me wonder if Haqqani isn't looking to get rid of those sub-commanders he doesn't trust. Certainly, that's all speculative, but it does make one wonder," said Lieutenant Colonel Dave Anders, Combined Joint Task Force-82 operations officer.
The leader of the Haqqani operation, Siraj Haqqani is stated as being nothing like his father Jalaluddin Haqqani, who was a very famous individual known for his strength and courage in fighting the Russians in the 1980s.
"This behaviour is typical of what we've come to learn about Haqqani. He ain't his father," Anders said. "Siraj remains in Pakistan in relative safety and puts his subordinates in grave danger. It's a different kind of leadership."
The Haqqani network is quickly becoming known as the terrorist network for Coalition forces to keep an eye on. They are stated as being overly hostile and brutal, including beheadings of women as well as killing with no real purpose or reason.
Foreign fighters from areas like Uzbekistan, Chechnya, Turkey, and Pakistan are being brought in by Siraj to help in their objectives, and they operate primarily out of the eastern part of the country.
