Living in an area of low humidity as we do, our throats tend to get raw and scratchy during the winter months. To soothe those sore throats, we reach for the organically grown Traditional Medicinals brand of herbal teas. The Traditional Medicinals company has been around for 30 years, producing quality teas from natural herbs. According to their web site (www.traditionalmedicinals.com) these herbal teas are best suited for self treatment of minor, non serious conditions including minor seasonal symptoms.
Throat Coat tea
Traditional Medicinals offers up quite an assortment of seasonal products to help with those stuffy noses, sore throats, and respiratory problems. Breathe Easy, Cold Care PM, and Gypsy Cold Care are three types of tea that we've used in the past to treat symptoms of winter colds. Our favorite seasonal herbal tea however is the Organic Lemon Echinacea Throat Coat which supports throat health.
This herbal tea is a blend of primarily echinacea and licorice root, with a proprietary blend of other ingredients including lemon myrtle, marshmallow leaf, orange peel, and cinnamon bark. The flavor of the tea is strong in licorice with a slight tangy back taste of cinnamon and lemon. It's delicious enough that even our children enjoy drinking it.
And does it work? Throat Coat offers instant relief from dry, scratchy morning throats. We've noticed that it also seems to open up nasal passages and helps unstuff those stuffy morning noses.
Preparing herbal teas
Like most herbal teas, to realize the full benefit of Throat Coat, one must steep the tea in boiling water for 10-15 minutes. We sweeten the tea with a tablespoon of honey which also helps in calming those sore throats. Traditional Medicinals recommends at least 3 cups of the tea daily.
Traditional Medicinals Lemon Echinacea Throat Coat tea is not meant to be a substitute for treating a chronically sore throat. It is however, a wonderful morning brew for those of us who live in a dry climate and wake up every morning with dry throats.
