Have you ever walked or driven past a house where you have seen a pet neglected and/or abused on more than one occasion? Unfortunately, many of us have. What goes through your mind when you see this? We “tisk” at such situations, keep walking, and maybe go home and tell our spouse or a friend what a shame it is. This does not help the animal in any way. This "pet" is going to continue to be neglected and/or abused. The fact is, you can DO something about it. You can call your local county animal control office and even remain anonymous! All you need to tell them is the situation and the address of the victim. That’s it!

How do you evaluate if an animal is in trouble? Look for these signs and other signs related:

* You have encountered the animal on more than one occasion without fresh water or adequate shelter

* You have witnessed (or heard) this animal being physically abused

* The animal has obvious health problems, such as severe infestation of fleas, wounds, or skin conditions that are not being tended to

* You have suspicions that the animal(s) are being "fought" or trained to fight in a dog-fighting ring

* An obvious fighting ring on the premises and/or notice obvious gatherings for such events

* You see the same animal roaming the neighborhood un-leashed and/or unsupervised

* A numerous amount of “pets” living at the residence….possibly and most likely evidence of a “puppy mill” situation

  • Look for these signs and other signs related...
  • Think about that dog you have seen in such conditions as you walked by tisking and feeling so bad
Did You Know?
Most dogs that are teased/taunted by kids (especially on a regular basis) regardless of the breed, the pet will most likely, eventually, (and MOST UNDERSTANDABLY) attack the aggressor! Wouldn't YOU? Why do you think news reported dog bites are only reported when it involves a Pitbull, Rottweiler, or other "commonly aggressive dog breed?" What most people don't know or consider is what kind of "news-worthy" information would the MOST COMMON dog bites provide? People would learn that it's actually by the Chihuahua, Pomeranian, and Min-Pin!! Doesn't make for good TV news, does it? Of course not! So, think about HOW MANY bites by those most common breeds never get officially reported! Why? Because people will most likely tune in to reports on the dog breeds that have already received an under deserving, unfortunate reputation.

I would love to help these animals, but I'm of the mind that being in miserable, even horrifically painful existence, is better than dying. Unlike many animal rights groups, like PETA, I believe in the sanctity of life (that includes nonhuman animal life), and it is naive to assume that calling the authorities on these animals' owners will lead the vast majority of these animals to anything else than "being put out of their misery" at one shelter or another. I don't believe "saving a life" can ever mean leading to it prematurely ending. Not for me, not for anything.
