Public education, today, is different from that in decades past. Where teachers once had some degree of authority over physical punishment, today, these options are not as readily available. With an increased risk for assault against teachers, the educational setting has vastly changed in terms of security and social support of both students and educators. In many school settings, there is a push to bring in the social and psychological support to assist at-risk students in achieving academic success. Because drop-out rates are at record numbers, many schools are taking a new and innovative approach to managing children with behavior complications. Because there is a need to provide additional care and support to at-risk students, school districts are now employing more counselors and social service professionals to assist in managing these unique groups of children.
In decades past, the concept of providing "care" to students would have been unheard of. Today, education professionals understand the importance of balancing social and psychological support to achieve academic success. As a result, students who would have dropped out of school in prior decades are, today, achieving academic success due, in part, to the support of their educators. Because school education budgets are tight, school districts, while understanding the need for care and support, may find it difficult to create a more caring program.
