The American Pipit is a medium sized songbird which can be found all over North America; in short, it is quite popular, and definitely a bird we can all observe. The American Pipit, which is also known
as the Water Bird, has a habit of bobbing its tail which makes it more identifiable for most; however, keep in mind, that these birds are rather small, and will take some careful observation.

The American Pipit is a medium-sized songbird which is 6 inches tall at its largest although it will normally be smaller. Its wingspan, however, is a lot larger than its body height going up to 11 inches. The American Pipit is not a very attractive bird, and is usually just a brown lump with white stripes, and a dark-colored, thin beak. Their tail feathers can be quite long, and is usually bobbing up and down. Their underside is a lighter brown than that of their back and head. Another distinctive feature is that they have long, dark colored legs which have a claw on the hind toe. The American Pipit may look different depending on whether they are breeding or non breeding. Both genders, however, will look alike although the males will be slightly larger.

The American Pipit is a bird of migration which is why they can be found all over North America in different seasons. For example, in the summer, they will normally breed in Alaska, and the upper areas of Canada to Southern Arizona and New Hampshire. However, in the winter, it will travel to Southern United States and Central America. Normally, in the summer, they will start breeding in Alaska ; however, while winter comes, they will start to migrate along rivers, beaches, marshes, etc.

The American Pipit, just like any other bird, will feed on insects and seeds. They do feed together in large flocks, and will peck at the ground and vegetation in order to dig up those grubs!

  • The American Pipit is considered a medium-sized, brown-colored songbird.
