Visiting Yosemite Falls
Breathtaking, Ferocious, and Vast, Yosemite Falls is One of the World's Largest Waterfalls

Yosemite is a mecca for both the outdoor enthusiast and those who are seeking a glimpse of some of 's most wondrous wilderness. Some of the most spectacular sights are found up high in the breathtaking vista that is encompassed by Yosemite's wealth of waterfalls. There is one waterfall that towers above the rest: Yosemite Falls. This awe-inspiring waterfall is the largest in North America, peaking at 2,425 feet. Part of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Yosemite Falls is ranked as the eighteenth (some say the sixth) tallest waterfall in the world.
Yosemite Falls consists of three drops: the Upper Falls, fed by the fast waters of Yosemite Creek, the Cascades, or "middle" falls, and the Lower Falls that flow into Merced River.
Upper Yosemite Falls
By itself, Upper Yosemite Falls is the world's 20th highest waterfall, with a 1, 430 foot drop. It is fed by the rushing waters of Yosemite Creek and wanders through Eagle Creek Meadow before plunging down to join the cascades and the lower falls. It is a spectacular, powerful sight that is completely viewable by visitors hiking Yosemite's trail.
Choose the right time to go, as the trail to the Upper Falls is often crowded with people. It is a long, steep hike, but the view at the top is astounding and well worth the journey up.
Yosemite Fall's Cascades
These "middle" waterfalls are actually several falls that "cascade" down to the Lower Falls; thus they are called the Cascades. These waterfalls plunge 675 feet before continuing down to the Lower Falls. Far less viewable than the Upper Falls, the beauty of the Cascades is often overlooked, mostly due to lack of public access. This is partly due to more slippery and wetter terrain that is more likely to cause problems for visitors.
However, there are several vista points from the Yosemite Falls trail that give an amazing view of the cascades, though you'll want to ensure you've got a good, steady pair of boots and that the trail is mostly dry.
