Z. Perry UPS IS more expensive than Fed-ex. I know this because I ship many products a month.
UPDATE: DHL will stop providing service in the U.S. in early 2009. UPS seems faster lately, and charges less than FedEx for most destinations. Postal service rates have increased but they're still the most affordable for small-to-medium size boxes and padded envelopes.

We have been using shipgooder.com to compare rates from all of the major carriers, realizing substantial savings in the process.
ShipGooder is far better/faster than RedRoller and ShippingSidekick, and does not require any account registration.
Consistently, the U.S. Postal Service seems to have the best value, but it can be argued that they suffer when it comes to aspects of customer service.

I have been in the Military for 14 years. Yes I would love it if Best Buy and other big online companies shipped direct to my APO when I am posted overseas, but they dont because they have sole source contracts with FedEx or UPS to save money so I have no problem paying APO Box which was started by people who served in the military for the military. I dont think that 5 dollar handling fee is that bad for me to get what I want.
I agree with you Larry, I have been posted overseas for 9 years of my military carrer, but APO Box shipping service has saved me on many occassions. I used to ship to my mother and she would sit on it for days. It is worth the extra $6 bucks to me to get my package shipped to me fast. Its not the best solution but until retailers understand that military members rely on the US Postal Service we have no other choice :-(

What's really sad is that overseas military members, who must rely on online purchasing far more than most folks, can either use merchants who will ship USPS Priority Mail, pay a God-awful premium for a forwarding company called APOBox (who profits on the military's antiquated rules) or else have a friend or family member receive and remail it to them! The exclusive contracts that UPS, DHL and FedEX push on their merchants might save most consumers a few bucks, but is makes matters worse for those kids out there fighting and dying because the merchants can no longer ship to their APO/FPO addresses! Shame on all the big shippers failing to support our fighting men and women! All it would require of them is an APO/FPO exception clause in those exclusive contracts!

I own a small business so I always need to find the best shipping rates and transit times. When searching google I stumbles on www.shippingsidekick.com. It compares the shipping rates of USPS, UPS, DHL, and FedEx side by side, as well as the transit times of the package. Its saved me quite a bit of money for shipping and the lowest price jumps from company to company depending on the day, the weight, size, destination, etc. so it's nice to be able to compare them next to each other instead of driving to each place or going to four different websites.
