There is a drug that was FDA approved in December of 2006 that children can take to help with their symptoms that they experience with Ulcerative Colitis. This drug is Colazal (balsalazide disodium) and it helps treat mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis in patient's ages 5 years to 17 years old so if you have a child or know someone who does with Ulcerative Colitis you may want to tell them about this drug it could help them.

The most common side affects associated with the use of Colazal were headache and symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea but it does help reduce the Ulcerative Colitis symptoms of bleeding from the rectum and the appearance of gastrointestinal mucosa.

Ulcerative Colitis mostly seems to affect adults but it can affect children as young as 5 years old. If you are a parent with a child who has Ulcerative Colitis you can learn to live with Ulcerative Colitis and help your child to learn to live with it.

This type of bowel disease, Ulcerative Colitis, causes inflammation of the colon and rectum and it affects about 5 percent of 100,000 children in the United States alone each year.

When I spoke with Tiffany bout her son Luke she also told me of a friend of Luke's whose name Brad they met at the doctor's office a little over a year ago and that's when their friendship started. They both have Ulcerative Colitis and after speaking with Tiffany she introduced me to April who is Brad's mother and she was more than glad to share their story with me.

April has agreed to share her story with me with the understanding that I will not give out any personal information without her agreement.

April says, "Luke is 13 years old and he was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when he was 8 years old so we have been living with his illness for 5 years and he is doing pretty good.

There are days that are bad for him but most of the time is in really good health. He follows a good diet and take his medication like is suppose to do. He is very active in sports and loves to fish, swim, skateboard and football. He even hopes that one day he can play football for the University of Alabama.
