There are 1.4 million people in America who suffer from Ulcerative Colitis and other IBS diseases. Ulcerative Colitis mostly seems to affect adults but it can affect children as young as 5 years old. If you are a parent with a child who has Ulcerative Colitis you can learn to live with Ulcerative Colitis and help your child to learn to live with it.There is a drug that was FDA approved in December of 2006 that children can take to help with their symptoms that they experience with Ulcerative Colitis. This drug is Colazal (balsalazide disodium) and it helps treat mild to moderately active ulcerative colitis in patient's ages 5 years to 17 years old so if you have a child or know someone who does with Ulcerative Colitis you may want to tell them about this drug it could help them.
The most common side affects associated with the use of Colazal were headache and symptoms related to the gastrointestinal tract, such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea but it does help reduce the Ulcerative Colitis symptoms of bleeding from the rectum and the appearance of gastrointestinal mucosa.
I have spoken with several people who have Ulcerative Colitis and people who have children with it. I have some friends who live it or have a child with or someone they know has it.
Jim has agreed to share his story of his son Michael having Ulcerative Colitis and them learning to live it and trying to make it through the rough teenage years as long as I don't give out any of their personal information and I have agreed, here is Jim's story.
Jim says, "Michael is a good kid and he has had it hard trying to learn to live with Ulcerative Colitis. He is 16 and was diagnosed with just a little over a year ago. He started get sick and having some of the symptoms that accompany the illness and we took him to several different doctors and they all said the same thing that he had Ulcerative Colitis.
He has learned to aspect his disease but it is still really hard on him. He is 16 and with the everyday pressures that come along with being a normal healthy 16 year old he has to live with Ulcerative Colitis. Sometimes he has to miss school or sports and now even dates.
